@Miikuli_miika Please can you confirm if you are wanting a vpn client (eg to connect via a commercial vpn service), or to run your own vpn server ?

@Miikuli_miika Kodi is a program and requires an underliyng OS to work, even LibreELEC also runs a linux kernel. It is the underliyng OS who manages the network connections, that addons are just a graphical interface to make a connection to the VPN.
So, yes, it is possible to connect to a VPN server in RetroPie + Kodi.

You can do it either by installing and configuring openvpn via terminal to make the connection, use a graphical interface to make the connection in a DE (RetroPie hasn't any installed by default) or use an addon for Kodi which has support for Debian based OSs. VPN Manager seems to support Debian based OSs according to this:
        https://github.com/Zomboided/service.vpn.manager/wiki/01.-Installation
Try to follow this guide (Repository install + Linux parts) since it is the official one, it should work.

@Rascas Many thanks! That cleared things a bit.

I had installed the VPN Manager directly from zip-file and everything went fine until it gave me the log error message. I forced the openvpn log to be written to the Kodi log location but then I received a new error message, which had something to do with openvpn. So it must be that openvpn is not installed.

So, how should I proceed? Should I type sudo apt-get install openvpn in command line? Taken from the link you gave me:

          Linux
In order to run on other Linux platforms, openvpn must be installed in /user/sbin and killall must also available. You'll need to work out how to fix this for your particular Linux install, but some of these commands below maybe helpful (such as for OSMC). If you're unsure, go use google:

          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install openvpn
          sudo apt-get install psmisc

For all non LE/OE Linux platforms, sudo is also used with the openvpn and killall commands. If this is not required, there's a setting in Settings/Debug to force this off.

@Miikuli_miika According to their installation guide you should run the following commands:

            sudo apt-get update
            sudo apt-get install openvpn
            sudo apt-get install psmisc

Than open Kodi and configure the addon according to their wiki and your VPN server.

@Rascas Ok, I'll try those later today in command line. I googled all of them and let's see if they help... It just that according to the guide You'll need to work out how to fix this for your particular Linux install, but some of these commands below maybe helpful... You'll need to wok out and may be helpful... Those made me cautious and I didn't know what to do.
