Rainbow at Startup?

I'm using a pi zero w with a suitable phone charger. When I turn my retropie on, I get a rainbow that half fills the screen for 1 second and then goes away. I don't see it after that or see the rainbow in the corner of the screen when using the pi.
Is this normal? Is it just there at startup to check the power?
