Can you switch between controllers?

Is it possible to plugin two usb 360 controllers and use them for all emulators as player 1 and 2, but also have a Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad plugged in as well and use that as player 1 (like with Retroarch emulators) when you feel like using that instead of the xbox 360?
I've done some searching, but still not clear about it. So I'm nervous to try plugging in the Buffalo iBuffalo Classic USB Gamepad in case it messes anything up.

Yes you can change controllers

@ckp you can change on the fly:
RGUI -> Settings -> Input -> Input User N Binds -> User N Device Index

but be aware that it can bring unpleasant results, as I detailed here:

Can you just unplug one controller and replace with another and avoid having to go into RA settings?
So will retropie, es, and emulators just work by doing this? And then when you swap back, that will work too?
