keyboard and controller keep getting disconnected

Help! When I boot up the pi it works fine until I try to configure some settings. Even if I don't change anything when I leave a specific setting the keyboard and controller stop working entirely. I have a rp3 and its just the default install without even any games.
Then once I restart I have to reconfigure the controller again.
