Macross II overlay

Macross is a series of science fiction mecha anime, created by Shōji Kawamori of Studio Nue in 1982.

The franchise features a fictional history of Earth/Humanity after the year 1999. It consists of four TV series, four movies, six OVAs, one light novel, and five manga series, all sponsored by Big West Advertising (Ref.: wikipedia).
US version of the TV series is called Robotech.

I haven't seen any of the OVA or movies myself but it seems there's a huge fanbase that love these series; so I'll probably give it a try.

The game, second arcade game of the series as the name suggests, is quite nice!

Multiple other games for consoles exist including Playstation and PSP.

A live action movie seems also in the talks.

And if you want an easy way to install them, @meleu created a great dedicated script.
Perform these commands on your RetroPie:

cd
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/meleu/rpie-art
cd rpie-art
./rpie-art.sh

After launching rpie-art.sh script you just have to follow the instructions in the dialog boxes. Once you have the rpi-art.shscript, choose the Update option to get all the latest art in the repository.

Actually, Robotech was a Frankenstein monster created for the US by assembling 3 series : Macross, Southern Cross and Mospaeda...
