ES works fine but AM is spotty. My guess is that the runcommand needs to be tweaked but that's beyond me.

it's very odd, that my ES and my AM use the exactly the same paths, but yours don't?

did you use the Auto Mount (easiest method)
          or Manual Mount Method?

In ES I just enabled USB support and it looks to the USB drive. In AM you have to configure it manually in the emulator setup screen.

as i now believe using the easy method, links and generates the matching paths, so the same paths are used in both instances

so you shouldn't have to link it like you have. i will try it again later to confirm, as that's how mine is set up and i've done no editing of any configure files, and my rom list were automatically generated when i did an update via RetroPie Setup

I think I know what's happening here. I'm building off a downloaded image of attract mode. That's why it's not matching up with my USB.

I used the auto mount with the image found on the Retropie site. The attractmode image came from another source.

im pretty new to this and am keen to know if im wrong, but isnt the easiest method writing the image to usb, then just having the boot sector copied to a tiny sd ?edit a line in the cmdline to point to the usb.

personally i think these methods are safer, just in case something goes wrong with an update or something then all you'll have to do is replace the ad card and your away, and you know your roms are safe, i used to do the moving file system method, but i had corruption happen 2-3 times and then replacing yer roms can be a pain (if you have a few).
this way when you get your set up the way you want back up your card, and your good to go

ok,cant say ive encountered usb corruption so far.any problems ive had are microsd related.
i can understand what a pain replacing rom collections would be tho, hope im not blindly walking the line haha.

                          not usb corruption,
file system corruption, a minor issue could happen with an update, once i had drop in connection, and all was fucked
