Hi i am just wondering when would Mame2014/2016 would be off the experimental packages and into the optional because for some games Mame2016 runs it a little more stable than Mame2000/2003/2010 but i don't want to sit through 3 hours installing it again because my SD card stopped working for some reason which i had to use the SD card i had in my Shield (which that system now is using a spare 8gb SD Card) and just find emulators in the optional package installs in a few min instead of a few hours which would be better.

One game that i remember that works better with the sound as well is Ninja Baseball Bat Man.
There is about 2 other one's i have tried it out with that had some sound issues but ended up working better with Mame2016 (because i didn't want to sit for another 2-3 hours for installing Mame2014).

@ecks Interesting. I'll have to try it then.

Well remember it is experimental which is why i am wondering if it will ever move to optional because optional does install a lot quicker and also if your Pi doesn't have a fan it does heat up a lot from the experimental packages.

running one game better is not an argument for promoting it to optional :) we'd need someone to start doing some extensive testing on it.

also, i don't see the point of mame2014/16. at that point, just install current mame -
https://github.com/libretro/mame - it will be slower on most games, but it's current, if that's what you want.

Well i did mention that is helped for some games that i play with and only gave one title as an example and besides certain Mame emulators does work better for certain games.
Also from what i recall it is the 2014 or 2016 Mame that allows certain games that uses CHD to work which would be good for promoting those experimental's and making them optional as well.

                  CHDs work in 2003 also.

if someone was to do a load of testing and report that testing then maybe they could be included, but again i wouldn't see the point compared to libretro current mame.

Well if someone would download all the non working/buggy one's from the list and test it out i bet more than 5 games will perform a lot better.
Also i tried out a few CHD based games using Mame2003/2010 and just doesn't want to start up and yes i know how to place the games and all.

@ecks I tried Ninja Baseball Bat Man and I'll have to disagree with your findings.

With mame2014 In the first area, I got varying drops down to 55fps but then it got to near 60fps further in the area.

With mame2016 in the same areas, it was a bit better, going as low as 57fps but fps varies.

I'll stick with mame2003 where it's a near constant 60fps in the gameplay areas.

I'm not counting the intro/select screen/level introduction where severe slowdowns happens on all builds. My pi3's oc'd at 1.3ghz.
@dankcushions We can't compile the latest mame because it requires gcc 5.0 and buzz already said he's not gonna bother because no one needs a bleeding edge mame.

true! forgot that. i think the next version of raspbian (which should come out soon?) will have GCC 5, so hopefully soon

57 fps is stable background music is still considered better than 60 fps with unstable background music because the background music is always pleasant to hear and brings back that nostalgic feeling not just the gameplay alone because what would happen if you were trying to play a castlevania game and the game ran smooth but bloody tears sounded horrible you or other people would complain about that until you find a working core but it is only found in the experimental packages which i don't think many people would wait like an hour just to get a core to get a better play experience.
Also 57 fps and 60 fps is nothing too different because without a fps counter you would not notice the difference at all and for someone like me that has played his PS1 games on PC and not getting 60 fps but more or less getting something like 50 fps instead i really didn't notice it at all.

@ecks You are partially correct. I wasn't sure what you were talking about since audio seemed fine for me with mame2003. So I played a bit more until the plane boss. The audio is not unstable. It's not fully emulated. Slightly changed fps the further i went.

Mame2003: 60fps most of the time. Audio is not scratchy but not fully emulated.
                            Mame2010: Same as 2003.
Mame2016: 53-57fps and maybe lower, depends on the area. Audio is slightly scratchy when its in the low 50s but audio is properly emulated.
FBA: I tried it for the hell of it, I'm testing enough damn emulators. It did the worst..45-48fps but audio is properly emulated.
