You'll need to uninstall Kodi 15.2 first but follow this walkthrough:

          https://mtantawy.com/quick-tip-how-to-update-to-latest-kodi-16-jarvis-on-raspberry-pi/

Almost everything works for me now except both right and down on my Xbox Controller's left analog stick do not register in Kodi 16.1 but luckily you can wrap around by going all the way to the left or up.

@Rascas that changed with retropie 3.8.1, it isnt on experimental. it now shows on optional packages and it installs kodi 15.2 as i already said

@alfredox123 No, in RetroPie 3.8.1 it is still on experimental menu, it changed only in 4.0-dev, so please change the topic description to be more clear.

@alfredox123 I'm using RetroPie 3.8.1 and used that walkthrough and I have a working link to Kodi inside the Ports menu. I also did what you did before and installed Kodi 15.2 first so that might have made the menu entry but I also uninstalled Kodi 15.2 then did the above walkthrough.

There was an issue introduced after 3.8.1 as part of the 4.0 changes that broke Kodi the kodi install (in a way that the 16.x repository never got added). If you update retropie-setup this should be fixed now (or stick with the 3.8.1 image and dont update)

@BuZz updated setup script and updated kodi first, it says that it was downloading kodi 16.1 but were some error on some packages, tried it just to see what happens and it shows the blue bubles make a sound but inmediatly reboots it self to kodi and keeps in that way till i disconected from power. then i tried uninstalling and installed it again with same rebooting problem. any ideas to fix this?

@BuZz i feel really dumb now xD unplugging my controller and using a keyboard worked, if i use my controller when kodi already started control works to navigate in kodi menu, it seems that i need to do this everytime i start kodi if not kodi reboots it self

i tested a bit more, if kodi already started and i plug only the controller without keyboard, it start to reboot again, if i dont use keyboard or controller and use my tv control it works as it should, same with only keyboard and same with keyboard and my controller.

Check if it is not a power related problem. Make sure you are using a good PSU with enough amperes for what you are using with the raspberry pi. PSUs with separate USB cable can be a problem since only the good ones works fine, make sure there isn't problems with your connections.
If it continues, post your Kodi log to get more detail.
