Fuse
can you explain why not having tde is a problem loading d64? they load just fine for me. i havent found a game yet that has an issue. and the sound in lr-vice is 1000 times better than the standalone vice. also the absolutely terrible video glitches i get in vice dont exist in lr-vice. plus it gets slowdown. if i find a game that will only work in vice i will use it. but with the poor audio and video in standalone vice i wont use it if i dont have to.
I didn't say anything about TDE being a problem loading .D64. The OP's post was about Tape images not loading. I just said that lr-fuse is experimental and some features are not implemented according to what @BuZz said. I'm also not sure what the sound problems you're having as mine sounds perfect with no video glitches. You must have set your options wrong. And like @AliBengali said, you can map absolutely anything to a controller button. I have even mapped buttons so I can change between the 8580 SID chip and 6581 on the fly. Each to their own, if it aint broke don't fix it.
-
@maxbeanz i never had a c64 so i dont even know what the different chips do or any of the other config stuff really does. All i know is the games play and i enjoy them. And since i use a keyboard button mapping isnt an issue for me.
-
@edmaul69 That's cool my man. 'lr-vice' defaults to using 6581 Fast SID which sounds shite and stops 'Warp' mode from working (it actually slows it down slower than normal speed! A RPI3 is not powerful enough). Try the Commodore demo 'The Very First'. You see snow landing on the Commodore logo and can hear the wind blowing. Try this on 6581 Fast or 8580 !! Also try Impossible Mission 1 & 2 and listen to the speech.
For reference, 8580 Fast SID sounds the worst (but Warp mode works correctly). 6581 ReSID sounds the best but uses a lot of power (and Warp doesn't work properly because of this).
-
@maxbeanz so im confused about warp. On standalone vice all it did is fast forward really really fast. You talk about it like you keep it enable. Now you keep saying lr-fuse even though we have been discussing lr-vice
-
Yeah my bad, I meant lr-vice, corrected. I use Warp to speed up the loading etc. but can still keep True Drive Emulation on.
-
@maxbeanz so what does true drive emulation do that is different from what it does without it?
-
@edmaul69 TDE vastly improves compatibility. Buzz probably knows more about what works and what doesn't work on lr-vice. Also about Warp mode, the emulator auto enables it / turns it off when booting games, but with 6581 Fast SID set it's actually loading slower!
-
@maxbeanz i actually dont mind not using warp. The fact that i have to wait for the game to load kinda gives me a sense of realism. I use original controllers for my systems too so i get the authentic feel of using a real machine.
-
@maxbeanz you say warp is set by default on loading? Since the retroarch gui lets you change the sid, i tested each one from a fresh selecting of a disk game and from the time the blue screen pops up to the time it changes to flipping color screen, both fast sid's were 5 seconds faster than the others, so im not sure what the the slow loading issue is?
-
Good morning @maxbeanz - yes - i don't understand it too. Everything is fine - i am running amiberry/whdload too- its running great. But my vice dont like tapes (these are zip's from
Gamebase64 v15). But i'll try to install binary again. I changed some options in vice. I read it before - changing much settings is no good idea with vice like you mentioned, @mediamogulAnyway- yesterday i bought a logitech wireless keyboard with touchpad. This was planned long time before ... So its more comfortable to use retropie/c64 or lr-vice or just play some old sierra games like Space Quest 1&2. But ill try the hint from you @edmaul69 - to controll the gui via controller.
Have fun, all together!

I remember some games on Atari & C64 took up to 30 minutes to load from tape. Spectrum was better - 5 minutes (without turbo gadgets), but still. I'm all up for realism but this is where I draw the line :)
-
@arkive well that is a bit excessive. So on lr-vice with the fast sid's it takes 1:20 to load a disk. That isnt too bad. Need to test tape time
-
About the same for tapes

@alibengali if you go into the retroarch gui and go into quick menu options and change controller0 type from keyboard to joystick it then allows you to enter vice menu and vice keyboard from a controller. also one of the controller buttons makes your analog the mouse so you can control everything with your controller now.
Its working! Thank you. I never touched anything in Retroarch - i was always scared about these lot of options... and scared to destroy my whole good running retropie 4.2 Setup). I bet i should read some more about how it all works together (Emulationstation, Retroarch, Emulators) to understand that. Perhaps then i will find the Problem why "my vice" dont like Tape Images. Perhaps there's something to edit (eg the Script responsible for starting vice with parameters). But perhaps the configuration of vice itself..... and not retroarch....
Update:
In Vice i see the t64 File in the temporary dir (the t64-file is original stored in zip)- so the automatic unzipping process is running fine.In the zip-file there is the image t64 and the version.nfo.
But the d64 files are working great. The d64 are stored in zip, too (d64 and version.nfo).
Will have a look this evening (still not at home)..... like i wrote: try to install vice binaries again. -
The worst offenders on C64 were the tape versions of disk games, but also some tape-only curiosities. Here are some bad un's: http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38423
I didn't have a disk drive back in the day, yet of course still wanted to play big games like Pirates! or Defender Of The Crown. Used to do my homework while waiting...

@edmaul69 Just out of interest, did you do a comparison with normal vice to check the speed differences ? It doesn't take anywhere near 1:20 to load a disk. As I said before, vice/lr-vice automatically sets Warp mode ON when booting but because lr-vice is set to 6581 Fast it loads even slower than normal. If you turn on the Status Bar in the lr-vice options (F10) you can see. (Maybe the SID modes aren't implemented correctly).
For example :-
'Mayhem in Monsterland' in 'lr-vice' takes 2 minutes !! to get to the cracktro screen.
In regular 'vice' it takes 27 Seconds.

A basic question: how do I actually map Vice functions to a joypad? (wired Dualshock 3). At the moment "emu menu" is mapped to L3, I'd like to change it.
And not so basic question: anybody used it with a CRT? On mine - with Pi2SCART- it doesn't look too good, it's kinda fuzzy. Pixels definitely not 1:1. (I switched off the CRT filters in the options)
Also, when I set "max resolution limit" in vid options to Fixed, pixels become 1:1, but the display is scaled improperly (black bars at top and bottom, left & right goes bit off screen). I tired adjusting other vid options but to no avail,

you just go to the menu function in menu and press "m" on keyboard.
Now you have to press a key to bind this key to the function. -
****** SOLVED: *******
In Vice i used "reset settings to defaults" and now Tape-Images are loading!
But i am afraid to say the "save settings" option is not really reliable/stable (i can "save" changes of my settings - but at the next start the changes are gone... Have to check that now....
