Confused... what is the difference between MAME, FBA, NeoGeo
-
So Ive been searching and googling and nothing seems to explain it... these all seem to run the same games. what is the difference between them? And which one is best to use?
-
@Duxa MAME and FBA are emulators that play arcade game roms. NeoGeo is a cartridge-based game system made by a Japanese company that made many of the games.
-
@caver01 Is there a benefit of using one over the others? Why not have them all lumped into one thing if they play the same games? Or is it better to use one over the others. For example.. for Metal Slug.. how do I know which is better to use?
-
@Duxa yeah, some work better for some games and others work better for other games. That is exactly why we have so many arcade emulators. The differences are often subjective, so you will need to try them yourself and decide. Just make sure you read all of the documentation here and that you are using roms from the romset version that matches the emulator you are trying. They don't all use the same rom version. Again, this info is in the documentation here.

@Duxa I like to use libretro cores whenever possible because of the flexible video configurations and because I can use shaders to make my LCD look like an old arcade monitor. I use lr-fbalpha for NeoGeo games and fighter games, AdvanceMAME for vector games, and lr-mame2003 for almost everything else. Good luck.

How do I install lr-mame2003? When I looked at optional installs in Retropie there was only 2010 version.

@Duxa It's installed by default so is under Main Packages
