I am having very consistent crashes while in ES. I have burned sever different SD cards with the 4.2 image that I grabbed from this site. This is happening on a pi zero w. If I do not select a rom within a few minutes The screen will freeze and I have to do a hard shut down. If I try to scrape my roms then I get an almost instant crash. It may load one image and then it will freeze. What logs should I be looking at?

Pi Model or other hardware: Zero W
Power Supply used: 1 amp banggood
      RetroPie Version Used :4.2
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website (will be added tonight)
USB Devices connected:Keyboard or Helder AIO Board
      Controller used:AIO Board (Arduino)
      Error messages received:None
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):Is this relevant?
      Guide used: n/a
      File: n/a
      Emulator: n/a
Attachment of config files: (Will Add tonight If needed)
How to replicate the problem:Navigate in ES

@onesojourner Have you tried another PSU ? crashes/freezes are often caused by a bad / weak psu.

@onesojourner what theme are you using? And when you mean that you need to select in a few minutes, does it mean that if you don't do anything and it goes to a screensaver, it'll also crash?

I do have another psu I can try. I would think a bad psu would show itself in game though.

I have used both the carbon theme and there is a theme on sudomod that works better for small screens. The name escapes me at the moment. Both crash the same though.

If I don't select a game quickly then ES will crash. I do not see a screen saver. The screen just freezes and I cannot do anything.

@onesojourner could you try increasing the screensaver time to a significantly larger value to make sure it's a non factor?

Does it happen when in the system view? Game list view? Both regardless?

Are you using videos in your theme?

If you can access your Pi via SSH when it crashes can you open the .emulationstation/es_log.txt file and share its contents?

From what I can tell this happens in all views. I am not using any videos. This will crash on a completely vanilla retropie 4.2 build.

I just got ssh enabled last night so I will try to get those logs and get them posted later tonight.

@onesojourner thanks. I suppose I was trying to cross out the screensaver as being a potential factor - though I don't see why it would. If you can increase the screensaver interval, see if it changes anything.

Also, if you have a keyboard connected to it, when it crashes can you exit emulationstation by pressing F4?

Did you happen to resolve the issue? I've been having the same problem and can't seem to get around it.
