Was working perfectly now stuck on welcome screen - no gamepads detected and no keyboard response after my 4yr old did something
-
I had this thing working flawlessly for the past month. Its a Rasperry pi 3 using a Sandisk Ultra 16G card imaged from the retropi website. I came home today and my kid goes "daddy i broke the video games". I checked and sure enough now I get 2 error messages that Ive researched and so far have not been able to correct. My first huge problem is it wont detect the keyboard, iBuffalo classic gamepad, or PS4 controller. ALL of which were working fine before whatever he did. Im quite certain he got into the retropi setting screen by scrolling through systems. I had Atari 2600 and 7800, Sega, NES and SNES, NEOGEO and Turbogrfx installed. It also will not let me get into it through my PC via the network or though WinSCP. Both of which had no problem accessing it before. I even had a shortcut for it on my desktop. I really hope I dont have to reformat the SD card and start all over again. PLEAAAASE HELP!!
So the first error message im getting is :
(FAILED) Failed to start Load Kernal Modules
see 'systemctl status systend-modules-load.services' for details (but of course i cant get into it to look)
the second is:(FAILED)Failed to start Configure Bluetooth Modems connected by UART
see 'systemctl status hciuart.service' for detailsI know there are topics regarding these online and on here, but none of them seem to explain my specific issue of not being able to access it in anyway to try and figure out what is wrong or change it. All i can do is unplug and replug it to no avail. Anyone?
-
ughhhhghghghghghg no one? anyone?
-
Your kid may have started an update and then interrupted it. You might try running a full update if you're able to. Of course without keyboard or SSH, I don't see how you would. The best advice is for the future and that is to always make frequent backups after setup. Oh yeah and "daddy i broke the video games" might very well be the most adorable sentence I've heard in my life.
-
another suggestion would be to either use the kids mode branch or at the very least disable the runcommand menu and hide the retropie menu
-
@herb_fargus ahhhh i def need to disable both of them. I have been now able to get into the files etc on it through an ethernet cable directly connected but I dont know how to tell what happened or what to fix. any ideas?
-
I am able to get into the configs folder through the ethernet and then can get to the emulationstation folder and it has a es_log.txt file. im hoping you can maybe tell me what to do from looking at it? or does it have nothing to do with anything? Ill post it anyway -

Your really should've used pastebin for that log.
I think I'd be tempted to SSH in to it and run the retropie setup.l, and run the update, which will at least reinstall emulation station and the emulators to a known state.
-
...actually on further reading of your log file, it looks like it isn't even finding the rom files. Could you navigate to
~/retropie/roms/megadrive
and check whether the files are still there? -
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first
Format your posts! - put small logs in code blocks - see http://commonmark.org/help/ - and put large logs on a pastebin type site like http://paste.ubuntu.com/ http://pastebin.com/ or similar.
I formatted the previous post for you just to keep the thread moving.
-
By the way thank you so much for trying to help me! I really appreciate it!! Im sorry about that. Im brand new to this type of format and read over the rules but didnt understand some of them including the pastebin so i appreciate you fixing that.
-
@simonster the megadrive folder is empty. but the roms i originally installed are all in each of the corresponding folders (nes, snes, etc)
Also - how do go about SSH? im a little confused on that as well. I do have the retropie image file (retropie-4.2-rpi2_rpi3.img) is that what you are referring to? I will def attempt the steps you suggested if you can poss help give me a little more details in actual steps to take
-
SSH means using a client to go into the Raspberry Pi and searching through the files.
ETA Prime has a lot of videos on that, including this one: -
@itsnitro ok thank you!
-
@itsnitro see the problem is...i can only get into the files through my network on an ethernet. I cant access the actual retropie at all once it boots.
-
@Ummagitcha well through your network is what you need. If you are on a windows computer, you can use a program called putty to ssh in and run the retropie setup from the commandline.
-
@edmaul69 I was using WinSCP but it also will NOT allow me access anymore. :/
-
Ok. If you haven't ever updated anything or made any significant changes, my recommendation would probably be to backup your Roms, if they're on the SD card, and just reinstall the image you have and put the Roms back in.
Might feel like a pain at this stage, but might be better for you in the long run. We don't know what might've broken there, so you're just fixing one thing at a time.
Also, while RetroPie package upgrades are something we could attempt, I've heard a few recent reports on things not working as intended that make me suspicious of updating the kernel - so I'd refrain from doing that if you go the update route, at least for now.
If you plug the Pi into your home network via Ethernet, you should be able to login via ssh. If you can't, I'd plug a keyboard to the Pi, exit EmulationStation and see if it has a valid IP and what else might be happening there.
Hope these help :/
-
@pjft How can i exit emulationstation (or stop it from opening during the boot up)? Because again, once it gets to ES, nothing responds. No controllers, keyboard, or mouse. is there something I can hit during boot up to stop it and then something I can type in to go from there? Because It does seem like the keyboard responds during boot up, just not after.
-
@Ummagitcha when you boot try repeatedly pressing f4 on the keyboard. If it isnt completely messed up before booting into the welcome screen it should kick you out to the command line.
-
@Ummagitcha Press
F4
or make the Pi boot to the Terminal.
