Where to (legally) acquire content to play on RetroPie
-
@themazingness I did a quick look in the EULA, and it seems to have a few problems in it.
For example, in the US, afaik, you're allowed to have an offline copy of contents you have a license for, but the point 2-B-i implies you can't.
Also, 2-B-ii says you can't copy the product, and while I imagine they mean illegal sharing, it could be interpreted as "I can't copy the files to another computer, only download directly from Steam", and Steam does give an option to copy the game between computers, afaik.
2-B-v says we can't reverse engineer the game, but from what I know, not just reverse engineering is either legal or at least prohibitions are not enforced in most countries, but having the offline copy I mentioned before some times involves this sort of thing.I didn't read much of what's after, but I imagine it goes along those lines.
If I got something wrong, please do say. -
Late heads up, but Sam and Max Hit the Road is currently available as part of the Amazon Prime subscription and it probably ends today. It works on ScummVM right off the bat (tested with a Debian snapshot build).
It's also available on GOG and Steam, and both mention being powered by ScummVM, so these versions of the game likely work on any recent builds of ScummVM too.

Some Neo Geo Color Pocket games have been released on Steam (no GoG release, sadly).
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1586350/NEOGEO_POCKET_COLOR_SELECTION_Vol_1_Steam_Edition/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1575670/SNK_VS_CAPCOM_THE_MATCH_OF_THE_MILLENNIUM/I don't know about the collection ($40, oof), but a player has confirmed that SNK vs Capcom has the BIOS and rom at steamapps\common\SNK VS. CAPCOM THE MATCH OF THE MILLENNIUM\Data\game\SNK. Source: https://github.com/farmerbb/RED-Project/issues/31
-
lemmer on the Steam forums confirmed that the NGPC collection also includes the roms and BIOS.
Also, DeltaBladeX on the Steam forums informed me of this wiki similar to what's being done here: https://wiki.funkey-project.com/wiki/List_of_emulatable_games_(commercial)
-
@themazingness That's my wiki. 😅 Thanks for the confirmation for the collection though; I had it listed as likely having the ROMs accessible due to two of the other SNK releases also having them accessible, but knowing for sure is always better...

@cooliecoolster lol, I see that now :) I'm sure it isn't the first time I posted something that already had been.

Bundle of 4 Commodore Amiga games:
https://groupees.com/remute26
Minimum price during the preorder period is 6.66 USD.
The price will increase and the titles will be revealed after the preorder period.
Also, it seems who contributes the most will get a SNES ROM as well. -

SNK sale. A bunch of the individual games come with Neo Geo ROMs and BIOS, and the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection should come with NES and arcade (MAME compatible) ROMs.
-
SNK and Data East games are on sale at Humble Bundle. All the Data East games have their roms in the game folders, and as noted above so do many of the SNK games. SNK games often have the BIOS file as well. Note that on Humble you can get the SNK games as a collection, and that collection also comes in 3 volumes if you want to bundle but don't want the whole set.
There are also other classic games on sale such as a Tex Murphy collection which I assume would be ScummVM or DOSBOX, but I don't know.
-
@auster the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection doesn't have loose roms. They need to be extracted. This should do it: https://github.com/WydD/sf30ac-extractor
I can't remember if that's the one I used or not. If not, I suspect I mentioned it somewhere in this discussion, but since this forum's search functions don't seem to work IDK where it is.
-
@themazingness What platform are the Data East games for?
-
@cooliecoolster The Data East games are arcade.
-
@cooliecoolster The games are also on GOG, and they seem to include ROMs there as well, according to this post:

I found a nice rom hack for Mario kart DS. https://dswiki.garhoogin.com/ctgp-n/
All you need is something that can run Nintendo ds games, a Windows PC and a Mario kart DS game . The patch comes with software to patch the original game. I’ve tested it and it works pretty well! -
@unknown Try adding this info to the other homebrews & hacks topic, not here.

@mitu my apologies

Regarding the Disney games, i'd like to point out that the EULA is 1. not a binding legal document, 2. Is not digitally signed and agreed to before purchase and 3. does not replace or supersede your regional laws.
If you purchased it, you're free to run the games on whatever computer you like, you're restricted from sharing it with any third party obviously. -
There is a Capcom sale on Fanatical right now. Several collections with extractable games are included in the sale:
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Mega Man X Legacy Collection
Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
The Disney Afternoon Collection -
There's now patches for the Castlevania Advance games: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=33506.0.
