Where to (legally) acquire content to play on RetroPie

@cooliecoolster The Data East games are arcade.
-
@cooliecoolster The games are also on GOG, and they seem to include ROMs there as well, according to this post:

I found a nice rom hack for Mario kart DS. https://dswiki.garhoogin.com/ctgp-n/
All you need is something that can run Nintendo ds games, a Windows PC and a Mario kart DS game . The patch comes with software to patch the original game. I’ve tested it and it works pretty well! -
@unknown Try adding this info to the other homebrews & hacks topic, not here.
-
@mitu my apologies

Regarding the Disney games, i'd like to point out that the EULA is 1. not a binding legal document, 2. Is not digitally signed and agreed to before purchase and 3. does not replace or supersede your regional laws.
If you purchased it, you're free to run the games on whatever computer you like, you're restricted from sharing it with any third party obviously. -
There is a Capcom sale on Fanatical right now. Several collections with extractable games are included in the sale:
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Mega Man X Legacy Collection
Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
The Disney Afternoon Collection -
There's now patches for the Castlevania Advance games: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=33506.0.

GOG made a list of games that use ScummVM (not sure if everything is included), and many of those are on sale:
https://www.gog.com/partner/scummvm
edit: there's also a sale page for ScummVM's 20th anniversaryAlso, it seems a few emulated games are on sale for the next 2~3 days too:

[MS-DOS] Mortal Kombat 1+2+3 - https://www.gog.com/game/mortal_kombat_123
[Arcade] Retro Classix: Bad Dudes - https://www.gog.com/game/retro_classix_bad_dudes

@auster said in Where to (legally) acquire content to play on RetroPie:
Hey @Auster cause gog has an identical disclaimer on scummvm and dosbox games it's possible to google search filtering games using only one of those 2 engines.
This gets you up to date results and you can filter by date.
SCUMMVM: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Agog.com%2Fgame%2F+"This+game+is+powered+by+ScummVM"Dosbox: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Agog.com%2Fgame%2F+"This+game+is+powered+by+DOSBox."

Many ScummVM and Dropbox games are on sale as part of GoG's Activision and Blizzard sale (including many old Sierra games).

I’m not sure if this is true or not but I heard that after the Atari Jaguar was discontinued, it was declared open source. So maybe it’s legal to get Atari Jaguar games?
-
@unknown I just sent an email to their support (support@atari.com) asking about the situation. They'll probably answer on Monday or afterwards.
-
After Hasbro Interactive acquired all Atari properties, the patents of the Jaguar were released into the public domain, with the console declared an open platform.
This is only in relation to the console hardware, NOT the software.
It was to allow the writing and legal release of homebrew. When Commodore went bankrupt, all the thousands of games written by the hundreds of developers suddenly didn't become free overnight!
-
Wampus (NES homebrew) free to claim again:

Wow! I didn't know that about the Jaguar. That's great!
It is really absurd that other technology from 30 years ago isn't free to use now. It isn't like the original creators are still using it. They're all either out of business or onto making current stuff now.

@benmclean Currently they are working on Atari's new system. It's called the "VCS".

Oh, I thought it was called the
-
@benmclean Nope, that’s a picture of the system but it has the wrong name
-
@unknown The VCS is already out. It's basically a mini PC with Atari Vault on it. Might as well get a Raspberry Pi and Atari Vault unless you're wanting a Ryzen mini PC:
