no config found for virtual boy - how/where to load this config?
-
Hello I have a Pi3 running version 4.2.8 and it came with a custom image so I had to manually ad in Nintendo Virtual Boy so that everything would show up in emulation station. I have all of the roms in the folder and everything shows up (all games show fine in emulation station), but when I click on ANY game it goes to a black screen and says "no config found for virtual boy" and then reverts back to the game selection screen.
I did a search and referenced through thread: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/141/no-config-found-for-insert-system-here
However that did not give me a solution to the problem. In that thread an admin posted: "sounds like you have removed / lost some /opt/retropie/configs/SYSTEMNAME/emulators.cfg" to the OP but then did not give a reason or solution for what to do if that happens, however I did not delete anything or remove any configs.I looked through the docs and see where it says to put custom configs, but I do not want any custom configs, I would like the system to use the retroarch configs. I have not deleted any of the files or touched any of the configs for that system aside from manually adding it to the system since the global would not work over the local or whichever that way is (global over local or local over global). Perhaps when adding the system manually it does;t also transfer the configs from retroarch? However I added Atari jaguar manually as well and the games start up fine so I don't know why Virtual Boy is doing this.
Where would I go to make a correction so that I can type something in and get the retroarch config to work for this system?

Have you installed the emulator via the retropie setup menu.
If not it will give the error and boot you back to the games list.
Had me stumped the first time it happened.
-
@Chillimonster I am not sure, this took me a while to figure out how to even do this. I watched a bunch of videos and it seemed so easy to install emulators (through retropie setup menu), but since my retropie was bought off EBAY it has a preset image that apparently everytime I installed the emulators it wouldn't show up, something about it not updating global or local. I found the prompt online for Virtual Boy and manually added it to the emulation station config by typing it in with my keyboard. But as far as any retropie configs or anything I am completely clueless and have no idea where to do that at.
Since I had to manually ad the emulator to the setup menu, I was assume the configs for retroarch don't come over? But I manually installed Atari Jaguar and the configs came through and no issues on that. Not sure why Virtual Boy does this.

Third party images are not supported here for a number of reasons. Your best bet is to either seek support from the seller you bought it from, continue to research and support the installation yourself, or download and install a fresh image that we can help you troubleshoot.
-
@mediamogul that's kind of what I was figuring. I did try to do an uninstall and re-install of NOOBS on another SD card and couldn't get the flash to write properly so I gave up on that. Sorry for posting the confusion on this, I was curious where to input configs if they are not showing up.
Regardless of this being an image input by a seller, is there a place that one would go to update a config or where to edit those as in where are they found? I manually installed Atari jaguar and that works fine but Virtual Boy shouldn't it load the retroach configs when you ad in the emulator?

I actually am very sorry, but a little support always turns into a lot and these policies are put in place for a good reason. Ideally neither of us would be put in this position if EBay sellers would stop selling illegal distributions. If you should ever choose to reinstall a fresh image, I assure you that we're always willing to help as best we can with any issues you may encounter. The whole setup from scratch is not that difficult and you can be sure that it's configured properly.

No need to install NOOBS first. You can just download the image from the RetroPie site, unzip it, and flash that to your SD card. What OS were you using when trying to flash the card?

@mediamogul thanks for the info. If the image crashed on me and I have to reset I will try to do so. I actually had an sd card before that crashed and I erased it and setup the FAT32 and downloaded win32installer and tried to install a fresh copy of NOOBS and it just wouldn't take anything. I've contacted the seller to find out how to ad configs for the Virtual Boy. I had hoped someone on here would know what to type and where to type it in. Someone was able to tell me where to manually type in and what to type in for adding the systems manually so I was thinking there was a place for configs as well. I was only able to find that it says to install custom configs in a certain place but nothing about the regular configs (which I assume are to be pulled from retroarch when the emulator is installed)
-
@obsidianspider that was my issue for sure. I downloaded the retropie image, unzipped, but couldn't get it flashed to the SD card, would seem to work and then fail. I was using win32installer and Windows 10 OS for it. But that writing thing is another issue. I returned the crashed SD card to the ebay seller and he shipped me out a new one with the fresh image again (basically a retropie image with KODI and Pixel installed) came with no roms at all. To ad additional emulators the regular install would NOT work at all, it would update the local but not the global (or global not the local I can't remember) so it would not show up in emulation station. I found out how to manually install the emulators in es-config so they would show up. Now just having the issue with whatever config is needed for virtual boy to load the games and play. I'm assuming its a missing controller config???

As long as you follow these instructions, you should be good. It could have been that your original card was just faulty.
came with no roms at all.
It's actually still illegal to sell the RetroPie image. Also, as you're finding out, it's unwise to trust an unknown entity to pre-configure it.

is there a place to check what config retroarch is pulling from? The ES config is correct but where are the configs for retroarch. Does anyone have the text I can copy and paste into wherever it is needed to possibly load the ones for virtual boy?
-
@nitrouscav97 Id recommend using etcher to flash the image. Seems to have better results when people struggle with win32diskimager
-
@herb_fargus i have never had any issues with win32diskimager and it is so easy to use, that i dont understand why so many people have issues with it. Unless they forget to unzip the file.
-
@edmaul69 which is why I recommend etcher as decompressing the image is unnecessary. Other issues might be corrupted download/network issues
-
@herb_fargus I've also see people have issues with counterfeit SD cards (saying one capacity but actually having substantially less). I only buy my SD cards from "known" sellers like Amazon (sold by Amazon) or a local brick and mortar store (if they're on sale).
-
@obsidianspider yes generally unscrupulous eBay sellers can't be trusted to sell quality SD cards or really quality anything for that matter. Pity people continue to be duped

If I know what the config file looks like and where to find it or where I have to go to ad it, or if someone has the text that retroarch reads for virtual boy, I can go and copy and paste it in and then it should ready. Does anyone know where to look so I can see what it's pulling?

We've made our position clear on this and presented you with several options on how to continue without the support of this forum. These are the rules you agreed to when you signed up here. Continuing to disobey them is not a wise move.

No one had answered where you would go to see the retroarch configs. Should be nothing wrong with asking that. If I know what the config looks like and where it is I can edit it.
Basically I'm chastised because I admitted I bought a retropie setup that was sold by someone to me. I also admitted I couldn't get my WinZip to work even following videos. Maybe it's a bad network connection I don't know.
Asking for help on where the retroarch configs are and what to type in shouldn't be a bad question to ask. But I'm sure I'll get banned for my post. Do what you must. I'm new to while retropie thing and help is what I was posting for.
I'll ask again so the forum knows what I wanted to know: where are the retroarch configs and what is the config for the controller to type in for virtual boy? That's my question.
