Is your router transmitting wi-fi? Does it have antennas attached to it? Is it a wif-fi router? Unless you start to provide the information as requested, any further attempt to assist is impossible.

Regarding the wifi, it may be worth a try to install a desktop OS on your Pi and try to get the wifi working through that, at least that way you will be able to do it in a graphical environment which should be easier, and you will also know that the wifi works ok. Once you know all works ok, and you have the correct details etc you can always go to a retropie image install

                  Raspberry Pi 400 - overclocked to 2.3GHz
                  Theme - Comic book
                  Emulators: All of them...
Roms: Pretty much all of them...
Favourite games: Circus Charlie, Gorf, Gauntlet Legends
                  Controllers: Mayflash F101

                      Can you describe exactly:
-which Raspberry Pi model do you have (it should be written on the Pi next to GPIO port)
-what steps did you take to make wifi work?

i think 256 MB of ram

when i am in retropie setup i connect to wifi and enter name of ssid and password

Ok, so you're using Pi 1 B, meaning you have an external "key" aka dongle/adapter for wifi. Can you check what make it is to make sure it is compatible. Also, you can try to check that it's actually functional by trying it on your PC maybe.

Then you say you "connect to wifi". Does it mean you went into Retropie > WiFI > Connect to WiFi network and saw the list of routers there? Was the name of your router listed?

So...your wifi actually IS working. You just can not enter the password if I understand correctly. If it worked, you'd see "Wireless ESSID: tim-12345" above the "connect to WIFi network" option.

If this is the case, the question should be "why is my keyboard not working properly?"
