What games are you playing this week? 2017-08-07
-
@tashman Both great choices!
-
I used to spend hours on Turbo Esprit. It was probably the first "open world" driving game. Maybe I should have spent more time trying to nail the drugs car and less time deliberately causing traffic jams.....
As for Football Champ - there's nothing like a spot of controversial rough play. It's a very humourous game with some great detail.
-
@tashman Much to my shame, even though I heard a lot about Turbo Esprit when I was growing up, I never really played it until fairly recently. I did have a ZX Spectrum as my main platform, but there were always so may games to play :)
Playing it was quite a nice experience, I'll be honest.
As for Football Champ, I only learned of it in the past year, but it is a fun game. Some of the versions (maybe all?) will have your captain perform some super shot under specific conditions, but I don't really know how to trigger those consistently.
Still, fun game.
-
I saw my mate do a super shot (somehow) on the real arcade version back in the early 90s. It was a complete fluke. I've completed the game several times** recently but never managed a super shot.
** Not on one credit though!
-
Looking at your icon - I never completed Manic Miner properly. For Jet Set Willy a poke was required...
In fact these days I find Manic Miner quite difficult. I don't think that's so surprising for a 40-something year old! What is surprising is that I could remember the 6031769 cheat code thirty years on.
-
@tashman I haven't completed Manic Miner either, though it was the first game I ever played on my ZX Spectrum... It came as a pack-in with my ZX Spectrum +, in a "10 Best Games" compilation of sorts. I think I still recall most of them:
Manic Miner
Fighter Pilot
Match Point
Bomb Jack
Match DayHyper Sports
The Way of the Exploding Fist
Theatre Europeand two more, I think.
I didn't know about that cheat code, though!

Still practicing to get my learners permit.
I suggest the most realistic driving simulator of all!
-
I think I learnt to drive playing Hard Drivin' in the arcades. At the time it was very real to me, a clutch, a gear stick (with four gears), ignition key and steering feedback.
Then came the ports.....hugely disappointing.....and almost impossible to stay on the track.
-
I've played most of those. Match Point - I wonder if there's a tennis game/simulator out there (old or new) where the player doesn't just run past the ball swinging the racquet wildly. Love-15, Love-30, Love-40, game.... (switch off). Maybe it's just me....
-
@tashman Hah. My exact experience recently, though I don't recall it being as difficult back then! Might be my mind playing tricks on me, though. :)
Another game that was on that tape was Pole Position, and I'm still struggling to find the last one but it should come back to me at some point. I wonder if it was Spy Hunter? Anyway, enough off topic from me, unless I'm planning on playing that this week :)
-
While not really a game (though it does have XP) I've started using Duolingo to try to learn Japanese so I can play some of the cool games that never had English localizations.
It's not easy.
-
@obsidianspider It's a slow grind. Slow leveling up, low XP gain per battle, and lots of random encounters.
Best of luck with that.
;)
-
@pjft It's really hard. At least when I've learned a bit of Spanish and German in the past it was the same alphabet. I am slowly memorizing the characters, even if I don't quite know what they mean.
-
@obsidianspider Yeah. I tried Katakana about 15 years ago, precisely for the same reason as you, but ended up giving up. Katakana was manageable was, even though it was a different alphabet, if you read it out loud you could almost make out what they meant, as it was frequently used for English-words-in-different-alphabet.
Kind of like "oh-bo-see-dee-ah-noo-suh-pie-dah-roo".

Beat Ninja Gaiden and playing Ducktales now.
But none of the achievements unlocked for those games.
@meleu Does enabling cheats have something to do with that

Sure!
-
@meleu So enabling cheats will turn off the ability to earn achievements?

Yes. Sí. Sim. Ja. Oui. はい. نعم
-
@meleu Don't mind me, just going to bash my head on my desk.
Mainly cause I might have to replay Ninja Gaiden.
I might just say screw achievements for that
