retropie retrolink gamecube controller not working well

hello,
i am very very new to the raspb pi and retropie just so you guys know.
I've bought 2 retrolink usb gamecube controllers to play with on retropie. on n64 games it works perfectly! but when i try to play a snes game, the controller gives weird controls. for exampel: r1 is joystick right and l1 is joystick down. i really really need some help!!
i used to play with my ps3 controller which works fine.also, my gamecube controller doesnt have a select button. so how can i leave a game now?
