I'm wondering if any of the SNES emulators on RetroPie support games modded to run with the MSU-1 expansion chip.

For those who aren't aware: The MSU-1 chip, designed by Byuu, is a chip with up to 4GB of memory that can be added to an SNES cartridge (no mod to the system necessary) that allows many things, such as full-motion video and/or a CD quality soundtrack. Basically all the things that would have been added to the SNES had the deal with Sony gone through and a CD attachment for the SNES released.

More info for the curious: http://helmet.kafuka.org/msu1.htm

There are several MSU-1 modded games I'd love to get running on the Pi.

Chrono Trigger (CD quality symphonic soundtrack)
BSZelda: Ancient Stone Tablet (original broadcast soundtrack restored and translated/dubbed)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (CD quality soundtrack).

      Just to name a few.

The only emulators I'm sure work with MSU-1 mods are BSNES and Higan.

@skj reported playing the MSU-1 SNES homebrew of Road Blaster (Road Avenger) on RetroPie: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/472/daphne-thayer-s-quest/33

SNES MSU-1 games do work in In Retropie, you have to use the lr-snes9x emulator as that's the only one that loads them 🙂

lr-snes9x works fine no recalbox and batocera, but I can't find a way to get it working on the latest retropie image on my rpi3. I also update the scrips and emulators, tried to install from a binary and build from source but my games don't have the featured music, only the regular one... maybe the latest script or binary is broken?

EDIT: Got it working from USB drive

Lr-snes9x does load msu1 games fine. The only issues I've encountered are some tracks in zelda are scratchy but that's because this particular mod is meant for for the flashcart sd2snes where the audio is made louder...not sure how to fix that. The rest I've encountered include a file meant for emulators so those play fine.

Also, there's major slowdowns if there's transparencies. Even on my oc'd pi3 at 1.3ghz.

Allright! I got the MSU-1 mods working! They work great!

@darksavior There's more than one Z:LttP MSU-1 mod out there.
                  Try this one: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2234/
It seems to work fine for me, with no overclocking.
