coin acceptor for retro pi arcade machine?
-
im in the process of building an arcade cabinet, it is running retro pi off a pi 3 B, 2 player, it is using the IPAC 2 controller board and has the typical joystick+ button inputs, programmed in through the menu in retro pi. However for school im turning the project into a charity event (where all the money will be donated to a dogs home), 20p for a 2 player go, i want it to only accept 20p's to make it easier. What coin acceptor does everyone recommend and how would i integrate this to work once its game-over? A link to a UK buyer page would be appreciated with any help. Thank you

However benevolent the sentiment may be I imagine the copyright holders of the games won't be too happy with that implementation.

@herb_fargus i do have a large collection of games from all eras, no laws are broken if i use only roms i own and all money goes to charity

@miles Not correct. Think about charging people to watch a DVD you own then donating the money to charity. Your intentions may be honourable but you are still breaking the law.

@jonnykesh actually its considered fair use as i own the games and there is no harmed market, its like letting a friend borrow a 30 year old book or a CD, its not illegal distribution and there is no law that is clear cut with this regarding roms in the uk, thats why no law suits have ever been carried out for a non profit use, furthermore most of the copyrighted material falls under fair use as the games are being used in a creative style rather than dry cut for profit. The games are also not in a public place for play through. I've asked some of my friends in law and all see no harm or potential for harm. Thanks for the care and advice though

@miles its all rationalisation that will only be determined in a court room as with anything in the so called grey legal area. IP holders turn a blind eye to lots of things but once it starts cutting into profits the companies they waste no time in prosecuting (see all the recent KODI shenanigans in the UK) even namco sends DMCA takedowns to ten year old kids
In short any time someone uses others' IP to generate profits (even for altruistic motives) there will be a level of legal risk despite any rationalisations with fair use, backup copies, public display etc.

Anything like this would work well with an IPAC 2. https://www.amazon.com/Coin-Acceptor-Programmable-coin-types/dp/B01EAI1KAQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1508800034&sr=8-5&keywords=coin+acceptor
For arcade games, just program the coin acceptor as the coin in the arcade machine, (instead of using select or some other key on a keyboard).
I made a homemade coin acceptor with a few wires and some metal sheet, I don't recommend it but it worked just wiring it up to a button.
here is a good video on how to set up a generic coin acceptor with retropie
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
