What are the top 5 games you currently enjoy playing the most on your Pi and why?
-
@beldar Could you point me to that retranslation patch? The original crappy translation bothers me, but I don't like the psp translation either..
Come to think about it, maybe you are talking about the retranslated script of the psp version. -
@bobharris Tough list to make.
1 - Tetris (MAME, GB, NES, Any Pllatform Really): I am addicted to this game. Always have been. Life goal, attend and win Classic Tetris World Championship some day.
2 - Mr. Driller (PSX, GBA, WSC, Any Platform Really): Another puzzle game I can sit and kill an hour or so on easily and come back for more.
3 - The Legend of Zelda series (NES, GB, SNES): Need I explain? I’ve never beaten nor do I care to, Zelda 2. That game is horrible IMO. The rest, solid.
4 - Galaga (MAME): This has been my gateway to the shmup genre since I was a kid dropping quarters into the arcade cabinet at a pizza parlor.
5 - The Monkey Island series (ScummVM): As an old point and click fan, these games brought the humor into the genre. I’ve beaten all of them from old PC when I was a kid to the latest ‘Tales’ series.

I'm sure you've been asked this a lot, but which is your favorite version? I find myself playing the one included with 'Dr. Mario' on SNES the most, as it has my favorite version of 'Dr. Mario' and I'm constantly playing that against the AI. I also really like the Atari/Tengen port for the arcade and NES. Obviously the GameBoy is many people's favorite and I've enjoyed playing that with some friends on lr-tgbdual several times. I also have Texmaster 2009 installed on my RetroPie setup that simulates all the various modes of 'Tetris: the Grand Master', but I personally prefer the more casual Tetris game play of a console port.

1 - Galaga
2 - Defender
3 - Joust
4 - Metal Slug 3
5 - FroggerI'm old. ;)

I'm old. ;)
Come on now, you're not that old. It could have been.
1 - PONG Sports
2 - Death Race
3 - Combat
4 - Sheriff
5 - Night Driver...and let's not forget 'Gotchya'; the game that predates the joystick, yet still manges to have a sexually suggestive control scheme.
-
@mediamogul it really all depends on my mood which I prefer. The original Atari arcade version is really fun and so is the Gameboy version. The newer versions, are a lot more forgiving and let you hold a piece. Which is nice but I like a challenge. Last couple of days I’ve been playing the Wonderswan color version. Not a fan of the music on that version though. Tetris DS is fun because of the retro NES gaming that goes on on the opposite screen (I honestly thought you’d have to play both when I first tried it). To be honest, asking which version is my favorite is like asking which one of my kids is my favorite.

I've seen video of that one played before and remember wanting to try it out. So, you're saying that all the Nintendo stuff is inactive to the player?
-
@mediamogul the games progress in their in game, and the game also changes as you progress in Tetris, lines and levels. If that makes any sense. Works great on DraStic on the Pi, give it a shot.
-
@bobharris It is the translation used for the PSP version, but it was put into a patch that can be used on an image of the original game. I would be happy to point you towards the patch, but technically that patch contains proprietary work as the translation was done by SquareEnix. So, I don't know if I can do so directly without violating forum rules. I can tell you that it isn't difficult to google the site which is specifically about hacking disc images of Final Fantasy Tactics.
-
@beldar Thanks, but I'm not so fond of the psp translation, because of all the name changes and the fancy way of talking (English is not my native language, so it's often difficult to understand for me). I was hoping you were talking about a different translation, from the community.
-
@bobharris I can certainly understand if English isn't your first language. Overall I think the PSP translation actually does a better job of telling the story, but it uses some rather silly ways of trying to simulate Shakespeare. On the other hand, there are some amazing fan translations for games like Breath of Fire II and the Front Mission series. I've even found retranslations for games like Act Raiser.

Snes- Zelda a link to the past
PS- Strikers 1945
nes-mario
sega-mortak kombat II -
What do we have here? Ok, let's see... 5 are too much for currently playing, but here is what I have now.
-
Wario Land 3 on GBC: I am a little fan of the Wario Land 2 and liked it much, but never owned a Game Boy Color. I currently enjoy this peace of not very well known gem. It feels like a Zelda game in Jump and Run genre, get new abilities, go back to old places. Animations are detailed and lovely. The music story reminds me of the GB episode of Zelda btw., not sure if this was by intention.
-
Wave Race 64 on N64: From time to time, I go back and play Wave Race. I do this since 1996 and I don't know why. It just feels so great to control, its something I never experienced in any other game again. The odd thing is, I play it with a SNES gamepad now, with d-pad and it feels almost like home!!! I played all courses and levels, even reverse. Damn this game is so good, I can play it over and over again.
-
Parodius DA on Arcade: Didn't start yet, but today I will. This is because of the highscore competition on MAME ROW, a good opportunity to play this classic. I never played the Arcade version, I only know it from SNES. And on the SNES it have a lot of slowdowns, but I have really good memory of this game playing with a friend for score or on highest level. But I suck at it anyway. Don't expect anything from me. :D
Honorable mentions, I played them last month, but not anymore: Donkey Kong Country, Zelda 3 Randomizer, Super Mario Land.

not really in any kinda order and the main ones i go back to

I'm on a major 2600 kick at the moment.
- Stargate
- Millipede
- Pressure Cooker
- H.E.R.O.
- River Raid
-
Currently? In that case the set would be;
-
Xmen Children of the Atom (FBA). I was never into Street Fighter or Mortal Combat but this one for some reason calls to me.
-
Night Stalker (Intellivision) Because I finally got around to mapping the intellivision controls in a way that I can play the first games I had as a kid. Later I will build a more Intellivision friendly controller but I shoe horned in what I need for now.
-
Lock & Chase (FBA) As a kid I only knew of the Intellivision version but the arcade is that much better. It had been so long since I played this that I had thought my memories of the game were taken from the old movie "Cloak and Dagger" and I started to think the Lock & Chase game wasn't real.
-
Puzzle Bobble (AKA in the U.S. Bust-A-Move) (FBA) I loved this puzzle game and I was always pretty good at it. My 5 year old can do pretty well on his own and in VS mode, if I slow my shots down to one shot every 5 count.
-
I am saving this last spot for "New Tetris" (N64) may it one day be playable. I've seen people get other N64 games to work or mostly work but nothing for New Tetris. It grinds to a halt when the first silver or gold block is made. I want this version in particular because even my wife likes to play this game and she is not a fan of video games. So I will wait and hope Note the subtle plea for someone to find and post a walk through solution for this one game
Honorable mention to:
Legend of Zelda (Nes) Funny that I remember were almost ever secret is still after decades. My younger brother would erase my guy everytime I got to the last dungeon, so now that I don't have to worry about that and and have breezed through all the game I am at Ganon's dungeon and have only a vague idea of where to go. Maybe I should just reset my guy for old times sake -
-
Arcade
Ninja Baseball Batman and Dungeons & Dragons
PS1
Legend of Dragoon, Front Mission 3 and Xenogears
One word for all of them is "Amazing".
can't really give an opinion for each one since they all have excellent replay-ability. -
- street hoop
- ultimate mortal combat 3
- metal slug 5
- Super Mario Brothers
- Contra
-
@ecks
hi, is your Ninja Baseball Batman runs well in lr-mame2003 or lr-fba? as my test result, the sound seems shutter and framerate is around 47fps, not good. i use 3b+ and the latest version of retropie image. -
@sunnymo use AdvMame for that one.
