I am fairly new to this whole Retropie scene so please be patient with me.
I recently purchased a new Raspberry Pi 3 and built the image for retropie using Applie Pi Baker on my macbook.
When I start up the pi I get to a config screen where it asks me to configure the controller.
I have an Xbox 360 controller for windows and have plugged in the received into a usb port on the pi. However it will not detect the controller or allow me to pair the receiver with the controller. Pushing the button and or holding it down on the receiver does nothing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

@megahertz Have you followed the guide? https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Xbox-360-Controller

          @jonnykesh
I have but I can't even get past the first config part on boot.
It asks me to setup a controller, as it doesn't detect the wireless one I have to go ahead and setup the keyboard.
However when I get to the end and 'ok' is highlighted, I can't get any further. Hitting the enter key or any other key does nothing.

The only controller I can setup is the usb keyboard I have plugged in and hitting enter on that does nothing

@megahertz when you had setup the keyboard did you make "Enter" on your keyboard "A" on Retropie as "A" is enter in Retropie?

How do I do that? I enter all the commands I want to use on the keyboard and get to the end, highlight ok, try pressing Enter and nothing happens.
There is no option for an 'enter' key in the setup I am seeing

What he means is if you look at a basic 4 button gamepad such as an SNES controller(or even an NES controller), the 'A' button in Retropie is usually used to 'choose' a selection (i.e. what 'enter does on a keyboard in a normal OS or command line) but in the Retropie gui that all depends on how you set up your keyboard.

To choose/activate the 'OK' prompt, you need to use whatever key on the keyboard you chose as 'A' and to go backwards out of a menu you need to use whatever key you chose as 'B'.

You say you built the image but do you mean you just downloaded the one from here?:

                        https://retropie.org.uk/download/

As far as the xbox360 controller goes, if you are using the Retropie latest sd card image then once you verify the controller has synced to the usb adapter then it should just be a matter of holding down a button ( I use the green on out of habit ) and it's good to go. Xbox drivers are supported out of the box with the official image.

That's the thing, I cannot get the usb receiver to sync with the controller. I am using the latest image from this site, however when I switch on the pi I am unable to sync the controller to the receiver. I press the button on the receiver and also try holding it down and I get nothing, no lights, nothing.

I think I may have worked it out. I think my receiver for my controller might have died.
