@matalog are you overclocked ?Did you disable overclocking ? If you have enough memory, you probably have an unstable overclock.

Because of the first answer I got, I removed the overclock instructions, my device shouldn't be overclocked anymore.

The last times I have tried this, it has continued for longer than usual, but it seems to be in a loop, I wouldn't have left it doing that for over an hour.

I'll start it up now and leave it to see.

Why would it take so long? Surely mame isn't that big?

i doubt it's in a loop. it hits those memory warnings as it compiles every driver, i believe. there are 100s and 100s of drivers.

it is that big :) over an hour, as has been said.

I gave the program the required time to install (over an hour) and It is now working. Buzz, your answer last night was the solution - i just didn't give it enough time.

Should current mame install as readily as mame 2010?

            Thanks for the help guys.

current mame is exponentially larger so will take even longer, and more memory, to build. like mame2010, it's probably not very usable on pis anyway.

Im trying to install Mame2010 right now and it is taking forever. It seems to be scrolling the lines but not doing anything else. Is this normal?

It's compiling. It takes over an hour.

                    Thanks, its still running. Wow.

If I want to remove it, how do I uninstall an experimental package?

Update RetroPie-Setup as automatic removal is included. You can also install that emulator from binary in the latest version, so no need to compile it.

I have updated Retropie-Setup this morning, but find no install from binaries in mame2010 installer, only from sources? I'm on a Pi Zero, but see no armv6 restriction in lr-mame2010.sh?
