I'm planning to build a bartop cabinet and my question is about the gameplay buttons.
I often see (in the ready made kits and also people here building themself) there is the joystick and two rows with three buttons each. I'm not sure about the six buttons for what games they are needed, so I'm a bit torn between placing four buttons in one row or two rows with three buttons...

Reason for that question is, I want to use the GPIO pins on the Pi 3 directly, so with six buttons per player I probably will run out of GPIO pins.

Is there an emulator or a category of games where the six buttons are more often required than not?

        for arcade, typically fighting games

for consoles, well - think about the different consoles and how many action buttons they have. SNES = 6, PSX = 8, and so on. it depends what you want to play.

@dankcushions thanks. I didn't think about the R/L buttons on those SNES controllers.
