USB Gamepad issues

Merry Xmas everyone 🎅🏻
First ever post in the forum & I'm sorry to say I'm hoping some of you bods more experienced than me can help with an issue I'm having with one of my pressies from santa -a raspberry pi 3 retro gaming bundle from the pihut which is a model B and comes complete with 2x snes style USB controllers. I'm also using a cheap USB mouse and keyboard.
I'm totally new to this I'm afraid. I've set everything up by following the recommended YouTube videos and reading through literally dozens of posts on here. After hours of fettling I've got the emulators working for the c64 (vice) and amiga (amiberry) as they were the computers I had when I was younger and want to play all those old games on.....I've got some games downloaded and they load up no probs.
The one thing that is driving me crazy is that despite trying everything I can't get the supplied controllers to work in any of the games . I configured them during setup and they work in the emulation station platform but not when I get the game loaded. I've looked at various posts and videos so tried changing various settings within the emulators to no effect.
Am I missing something straightforward here? Any help greatly appreciated!!

YouTube videos are actually never recommended. The most current and relevant information can always be found in the official documentation.

What exactly are the supplied controllers? What emulators are you trying to configure them with? Are you using a pre-installed build of RetroPie that came with some sort of kit? Alongside those three questions, please fill out out everything you can from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

Especially not that herb fargus bloke. His channel is a mess!

Yes, but his video series of gluten-free pet food alternatives for tropical birds is unparalleled.
Edit: As time permits, you should post more. I really enjoyed the Christmas tree video you did. I'm about to start a YouTube run of my own and I'm hoping I'll have the time to realize it into a series myself.

Thanks for that. When I said YouTube videos I was referring to the one provided in the official instructions on the retropie site. I followed everything exactly and have the pi working.
I downloaded an image to SD card from the retro pie site, extracted it and installed it which worked fine. I've added extra emulators & downloaded game roms which I have transferred using USB drive.
I have the games running but the issue I have is that the USB controllers stop working in the games themselves even though they work beforehand in the 'emulation station' stage.
The emulators I've tried so far are VICE (c64) & AMIBERRY (amiga).
The setup is as follows:
Retro gaming bundle from 'the pi hut'
Pi3 model b 64 bit quad core 1gb ram
Official 5.1v 2.5a power supply
2 x snes style generic USB controllersI've also got a generic USB keyboard and USB mouse which work no problem.
I've tried to plug the controllers into different USB ports on the pi but it doesn't make any difference. I don't think the controllers are faulty as I've set them up properly there must be some way of getting the emulators to recognise them?

The emulators I've tried so far are VICE (c64) & AMIBERRY (amiga).
Those two emulators have a slighter steeper learning curve than most others, as they don't automatically have full controller support when launched. You'll need to use your keyboard to bring up the settings menu for both emulators ('F12' key ) and navigate to the area for selecting and mapping joysticks.
It's been a while since I looked at controller support for Amiga/Amiberry, but I seem to remember that controller mapping has some caveats. I'm not sure if you'll be able to remap the controller there, but you will need to select your controller from the pulldown menu.
Also, keep in mind that these two are computer systems and they emulate games accordingly. This means that a keyboard may be necessary on many occasions to begin the game, leaving the controller only accessible during actual game play.
More information on these two emulated systems can of course be found at:

Thanks for your time. I've added some snes roms and they work fine with the supplied controllers so I'm slowly getting there.
I've had a look at the sub options within the two emulators (vice & amiberry) and although I'm still struggling to get either to recognise the controllers, I can use the mouse and keyboard.
It's a love hate thing but I'll keep persevering! Thanks again 👍🏻
