N64 emulation crashes when Z pressed

Hi,
Noob here, just got my first pi and set up retropie. Also bought a couple of N64 usb controllers for to relive my youth of Mario kart 64!
Had an issue configuring the controllers but finally managed it by editing the config file, and the game runs nice and smooth, but any time I press the "Z" trigger button the game exits back to the retropie GUI.
It does it in a few games, F Zero X I've noticed it. But not all games, mario 64 is fine for example.
I've removed all the hot keys as well as I know some of those used the Z button by default, but it still does it. Does anybody have any idea? I'm stumped!
