MAME sets and compatibility

I currently have a gigantic set that I believe will satisfy the lr-fba-next set of "0.173 fba 0.2.97.38" - it is currently being sorted out by my clrmamepro
my question is this: can i simply use the dats for the other, lower-version-number sets on https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs to build those sets from this newer one?

In theory, yes. However, it's my experience that this yields different degrees of success depending on what rom set you use as a base and what rom set you're aiming to build from it. If the sets are close in number and the base is higher, it'll probably build just fine.

@mediamogul megarace is terrifyingly slow - the short video clip where the host says his "have a nice death, baby!" was really in slow-motion. with his voice coming across as really deep and guttural. Had I not known what I was playing I would have naturally assumed it was a recording from a microphone lowered into some dark pit to record the sounds of hell and the tormented.
the racing portion was very slow as well, unplayably so.

I had to look up MegaRace as I am not familiar with it. I assume you're talking about the 3DO/SegaCD/DOS game? If so, 3DO emulation is experimental in RetoPie and I've heard it's pretty slow. The SegaCD emulation works well, but the FMV scenes are going to be in a lot lower resolution, reducing the visual appeal of the game. If you have the heart for it, DOSBox is probably your best bet at running this game well, but being a FMV title, you'll most likely need to configure it to mount a CD disc image of the retail game as it launches so that the FMV scenes can be played properly. I have 'Night Trap' for DOS set up this way and it runs very well.

hey @mediamogul - i totally posted that into the wrong thread. i'm so sorry. that was meant for a 3DO performance testing thread...

Hah! Not a problem. I do wish the 3DO was more playable here. I'd love to try out 'The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes'.

yes. that's literally what clrmamepro is for :) however you get the best results by using sets nearer to the one you're trying to build. things have changed quite a lot over the years.
personally i've had no problems in sourcing the exact set for the various emulators in retropie.

thanks @mediamogul and @dankcushions !
I just did not want to keep multiple gigantic sets in my archives and also on the pi's memory card either
