                @saint_jimmy If you have a PC, just use SSH to access the PI, then type the command

                ls /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfig

                and paste here the output. If your Pi is not networked or you don't have a PC, then exit Emulationstation and type the command at the command prompt that will be shown after you quit ES.

                          do this

                          sudo pico /boot/cmdline.txt

                          add this to the end (make sure you make a space from the last letter)

                          usbhid.quirks=0x0079:0x0006:0x40

                          press ctrl+x to save and exit

                          you will need to reboot as well

                          sudo shutdown -r now

                            To be honest just search up meleu's RetroPie-joystick-selection https://github.com/meleu/RetroPie-joystick-selection/blob/master/README.md
                            It is really straightforward and easy to use.

                              i have the same zero day controller that parameter needs to go to the kernel to stop strange things happening when using two of them no more setup is really needed beyond that,

                                I had the exact same problem using two controllers but then I downloaded meleu's program and now my controllers work no problem

                                          ah ok if all is well in emulation station youll be fine its a mame issue

                                          i think you might have accidently remapped some buttons seeing your menu is going on when your in mame from the other post did you delete the cfg files to reset mame to defaults ?

                                            make sure mame isint running

                                            rm /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/mame2003/cfg/*

                                            this is assuming your roms are in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/

                                            start mame again
