Is this possible to have lag due to Bluetooth? I’ve only tried ps3 controller and with some games like punch out, there’s slight lag.

What is a decent wired controller that I could have 4 of so we could alternate from simple NES games to some MAME games like TMNT. Looking to have 4 so something not expensive would be nice otherwise I’d just get 8bitdo. Hoping there’s cheaper alternatives you all found to work great for a mix of NES to more advanced MAME

Yes, it's possible, especially if you're also using the Wifi. People usually get a separate Bluetooth USB adapter and disable the PI3 onboard bluetooth and this improves the lag situation.

If you want cheap, then the Buffalo Classic controllers are decent (though they suffer from mild ghosting - search the forum for details) for their price. The Logitech F310 is also good and works nice with RetroPie.
Don't forget to check the Controller section of the docs for compatibility or just ask the forum if you have a model in mind.
