I am in the middle of building my first bartop arcade and I have the zippy joystick from arcadesolutions.com. I have everything hooked up and working. The configuration worked perfectly. The only problem I have is when playing games like pacman it has a weird feel. I can't really explain it. If you try to go up it seems to be finicky about it. It does work but not the smoothest. Is there a way to calibrate the joysticks better than the default setup? Has anyone else experienced this? I guess what I am asking is what type of tweaks do you guys do to your joysticks if any? Also, running a raspberry pi 3.

you think pacman is bad try kung fu master. These games use 4 way joysticks and dont support 8 ways directions. so when you go up and right at the same time pacman doesnt know what to do with this input.

try center the joystick before changing direction so your only pressing direction at a time.

try walk and jump with direction in kung fu master and you see what i mean if you dont do it right it just jumps up up normally. You need to be in motion for a sideway jump too so its a bit challenging on a 4 way for kung fu master. Thats why i switch my sanwa to 4 way for these games

I kind of get that part. I was playing Pac man for Nintendo though. I was under the impression that Nintendo controllers were 8 way?

well i would say 4 bit you have to move you hand before direction would change. 4 way and 8 way are identical they have both have 4 buttons the is just something there that stops you pressing the 2 at exactly the same time

@bassman6805 You could look for joysticks that can be switched between 4-way and 8-way. For some, you'd need to unscrew the restrictor plate to change it, others have switches you still need access to from below for. The most convenient method I found in my own research was the Mag-Stik Plus joystick that allows 4/8-way switching by pulling up the stick and turning it. It's not cheap, though. I received mine this week and I'm planning to put them into my upright arcade cab this weekend for testing.

I remember, when reading about xboxdrv that it had a specific option for this problem. Would you be able to use xboxdrv with your current controls to work around the problem
