lr-mgba Error writing saves (not save states)

Good day.
my son was playing some Pokemon games (fire red and mystery dungeon to be exact) and the lr-mgba will not allow him to write save files. It errors out saying "save failed" or "unable to write save data, your battery may be dead and as such you can play the game but you cannot save your progress" or some such message. I am getting no system errors, just errors from the game saying it cant save progress. Any ideas?
Side note: lr-vba-next however has no problem saving game data. My son is currently playing using the lr-vba-next emulator in the mean time.
system:
Pi 3 b
no overclocking (at the moment)
stock CANA kit hardware and PS.
all updates have been installed from source
