I’m having a problem with the lr-mame2003 core. I was changing controls in the menu that comes up in MAME when you press TAB. I accidentally set the control for choosing an option to “none” in “Input (General)”. So now, I can bring up the TAB menu but I can’t pick anything. I need to know where lr-mame2003 saves it’s default.cfg so I can modify it or delete it, which should force it to produce a fresh one. I looked in “/opt/retropie/configs/mame-libretro/” but the retroarch.cfg file had nothing in it of use and the folder had copies of my MAME roms for some reason. I also checked “/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg” and “/opt/retropie/configs/arcade/retroarch.cfg”. I’m lost here :(

check subfolders in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/ and any subfolders/files in the folder where the roms are also.

I ended up reinstalling lr-mame2003 from the retropie menu and it quit working altogether so I restored my latest backup. I'm finding nothing in any of those locations though.

If you update lr-mame2003 from menu 5 - you need to update retroarch also as it depends on some new retroarch functionality. But with that you get samples support and working nvram saving etc (thanks to @dankcushions)

Lesson learned on that one lol well I just went into a game and changed the dip switch settings. They saved but I don't know where. If I knew that, I'd probably know where it saved the inputs earlier. Anybody?

I'm not sure if i did same for same emulator. Next time i think you can delete file /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all/cfg/default.cfg
and all should go back the way it was.

Ok after updating lr-mame2003 properly this time and changing settings to test, I now have a directory structure in my arcade roms folder and in them, the relevant config files! All is well now for future mishaps. Thanks for the help guys!

Edit: While searching for something else entirely, I just came across the directory where lr-mame2003 was storing the configs before I updated it to the new version. It was using "RetroPie/roms/config" instead of "RetroPie/roms/lr-mame2003/config. It's either config or configs, can't remember which. Strange lol It's useless info to me now interesting nonetheless.

@kmvegas Where are you? I'd buy you a beer! I looked through every config file and found nothing at all, just about tearing my hair out having gone through the same thing, I was a minute away from reinstalling when I did a last search found your thread after trawling thru the whole intehwebhs. Thanks for updating your post and sharing what you found!

lr-mame2003 hiding configs in /RetroPie/roms/config who'd have thunk to look there...

fyi in the latest versions of mame2003 the configs should now be in
                      /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/config
                      or
                      /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/config
(depending on whether you have your mame2003 roms in the arcade or mame-libretro folder)

I just got my first Raspberry Pi and installed Retropie. I have loaded several Mame roms for mame-libretro and was feeling pretty cool. Then I accidentally switched the "TAB" to "None" to pull up the in game menu. Right as it was disappearing from the screen I screamed, "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......!", in a long drawn out slow motion type scream. I knew my only hope was a forum. As senkun said, thank you very much for coming back and updating the thread. I am new to command line stuff so knowing where it to look is a huge help, now I have to do some research and figure out the right commands. I have hope! Thanks again!
