@Clyde @skraz If you haven't played it yet, give the SFC/SNES version of Tales of Phantasia with the translation patch a try. There's also an English dub patch for the cut scenes, but I actually prefer the original Japanese. The opening screen in particular sounds far more ominous with the Japanese voice over! I haven't ventured all the way through the game yet, but what I've played so far is pretty great. It has received a ton of positive reviews elsewhere, which is what led me to it to begin with. The combat system is kind of unique, as it's sort of an action/turn-based RPG hybrid.

@ts-x Thanks for the tip, I'll definately translate & try it. I think I'll also prefer the original dub, though. This review sounds rather promising, especially the combat, which seems refreshingly different from the usual suspects of FF-like and Zelda-like combat of most JRPGs.

Not exactly a hidden gem but a hidden feature

                  Street Fighter 3 - 2nd Impact

This game can be set to widescreen in the bios options (long press start). This means you can play Street fighter fullscreen on a 16:9 monitor (set video to core provided)

I did not know that until discovered recently. The video is not stretched it is native widescreen support. However with the successor SF3 3rd strike this feature was removed and 2nd impact seems the only SF game in the whole SF universe.

Do you know of any other 16:9 arcade games for mame2003 or fba?

I recently stumbled upon Ristar for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. Developed by (some of?) the team of Sonic The Hedgehog from an early character idea, it features unique game mechanics around Ristar's ability to extend his arms to grab enemies and terrain features.

Alas, Ristar isn't one of the 42 games of the recently released Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Mini that I bought for myself two weeks ago. If you're nevertheless interested, be sure to read about the changes for the international versions so you know which version you'd prefer.

For me, Ristar is much fun, really cute, and a refreshing variant of the too often somewhat-monotone platform genre.

Haven't checked yet if it runs on the Pi.

No, actually apart the "Heli look" the game is totally different.
It mixes action & strategy elements; you need to create your army on ground to conquer enemy's HQ and meanwhile pilot the heli.

@IanDaemon Reminds me of Rescue Raiders, I posted a review on that a while back in this thread.

@UDb23 Never played Armor Alley, but it definitely looks like it was derived from Rescue Raiders. I played that game at least once a day until my apple died, but could never make it past the 4th level without a cheat. Insanely hard, perhaps Armor Alley toned the difficulty down a bit. I will have to give it a try.

                                          Scummvm - Blade Runner.

Absolutely fantastic looking click&point game that's an awesome representation of the film and novel. If a little bit wonky in places when it comes to progress, but otherwise the mood and character of the game shines through.

Oh and not obscure games by any means but have been playing Apollo Justice & Professor Layton on Drastic recently.

The mic bits in Apollo Justice I was concerned would block me, but Drastic seems to send an input on the game that gives a constant blowing effect, so it allowed me to progress through the fingerprint sections. So any DS games anyone is worried about not working due to that mechanic, it does work!

And Professor Layton, despite being a touch screen game, it's very slow and as such, easy to use the analog stick as the stylus. Unlike something like Kirby where you need fast touch screen actions. So Layton is very playable and great fun on a big screen!

@Clyde Excellent ! A different team had a version of Hakchi (3.6.0) working with the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Mini with a Retroarch frontend but pulled the software as it had many bugs regarding compatibility with the Nes/Snes classics and are reworking their version of Hakchi at the moment. Have fun with it ! :-)
