Retropie - Stuck on Rainbow Screen
-
-
@buzz - So the image I was using from the download site is not suited for my pi?
-
Found the same thing when I ordered my 3B+. The beta image linked above has been working perfectly for me. I'm no expert but what I have read is the 3B+ can't use Jessie? Needs Stretch to run. I'm sure people will correct me if I'm wrong on that point. :)
-
@classicgmr No, that's correct.
-
@buzz Any way the new Beta Stretch image could be sticiked at the top of
Help and Support
for a while?
With a big headline "If your new Pi 3B+ is not working READ THIS". -
So based on what I see here, should I return the B+ and "downgrade" to the B?
-
@iamoasis Not at all.
I am a computer guy. I run a PC repair business on the side so while I am a NOOB to the Pi I know what I'm doing with computers. I had a 3B for a few weeks and I wanted a 2nd for other projects so I got the 3B+. Like I said earlier I am using the 3B+ beta image and from fairly new user standpoint I think it's great. The wifi is MUCH better but everything else works the way I expect it. I had it up and running faster than my 3B (but I had the experience of setting up RetroPie from the 3B to fall back on.
You already have the 3B+. Use it. You will enjoy it.
-
@classicgmr Okay, thank you.
-
I downloaded the file that ClassicGMR linked above and loaded it on the SD. When it loaded it brought me to Raspbian OS. It didn't load Retropie. What am I doing wrong? Furthermore, I'm unable to start the WIFI.
-
@iamoasis What do you mean by "Raspbian OS"? Do you mean the Desktop?
RetroPie has no Desktop environment installed by default on the image. If you are seeing that then either you are doing something wrong or your SD card is ready for the bin.
-
@iamoasis You're doing it wrong - get the image from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16307/retropie-4-3-15-stretch-images-for-testing, it already has RetroPie installed. As for the Wifi, there's instructions on that very page on what you need to do in order to make it work.

I'm having the same problem. I have the raspberry pi 3 b+. I went through all the steps on the website and when I tried to boot up my raspberry pi there's just a rainbow screen and lightning bolt. I have no idea how to fix the problem. I'm really new at this. Can I get a step by step solution.
Thanks.
-
@tj_coady7 Lightning bolt means the power supply is not providing enough power to the Pi. As for step by step solution - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/#installation has all the info you need, just replace the image from the first step (download) with the image posted in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16307/retropie-4-3-17-stretch-images.
-
@tj_coady7 being stuck with lightning bolt and rainbow screen together means you dont have the stretch version of retropie installed on your card
-
@iamoasis did you fix the problem with your rainbow screen? If so how? I'm having the same issue.
-
@tj_coady7 Did you read the thread? Do you have a 3B+? If so use the correct image that @mitu linked just a few comments up.
-
@jonnykesh I just read it. Sorry and thanks you. Ill try that.
-
Got it up an running thanks!
