audio issues with SNES in pi3
-
I have been having audio issues with my pi3 ONLY with snes, every snes emulator i have tried has audio issues.. some games are worse then others... star fox is one with VERY poor audio, sounds like a crackling sound, or as if the audio is lagging, i have tried different room and the same games give me issues mostly almost every game for snes is having audio issues for me..... i have updated the emulators awell with still no luck,,,, used a different TV and still no luck..... it is ONLY SNES that is giving me problems and it is ONLY the audio picture looks fine.... i have tried alot of different things. stressed my self out too LOL i dont expect someone to figure it out right away but any ideas and advice is welcome..... i have brought this problem up on the FaceBook Retropie also with NO luck..... again its ONLY super Nintendo that is giving me audio problems . even ps1 works pretty good so this is a long shoot Help?

@lovelorn88 Start by answering the questions from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. What emulator are you using ? Are you overclocking the system ?
-
@mitu no i havent overclocked anything... and i stated in the post ive tried all the emulators but im mostly using the 2010 one for snes
-
@lovelorn88 Please give more details about your system as requested in the https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first page.

@lovelorn88 Super FX games might be too slow on a pi3 when using lr-snes9x-2010. Double check by displaying the fps. If it drops below 60 then there you go. Try overclocking to 1300 if you have the cooling for it or use the faster lr-snes9x-2005 for sfx games. A temp or lightning bolt icon might also cause the slowdowns. If you messed with the video config or using a 3rd party image can also cause this.
-
@darksavior i didnt mess with anything......
-
It's normal. Try lr-snes9x instead of lr-snes9x2010. The latest builds seem to be better optimized. However, they don't eliminate the sound clicks completely.
What did it for me was overclocking up to 1350MHz (combined with a fan) and I don't have to deal with it at all with my new Pi 3 B+. The 200Mhz boost completely eliminates all SNES slowdown issues.
-
@matchaman im on the pi3b not the + and ive tried all the other snes emulators on retropie EVERYONE of them have some kinda audio stutter i wouldnt think i would need to overclock my pi3 just to play snes games.....
-
@darksavior even Batman Returns has audio stutter its not just the FX games its the emulation on the pi for snes
-
Yes, that's what I'm trying to say. Unfortunately you'll have to either overclock it or sell it for a 3B+ model.
Alternatively you can use lr-snes9x2005 but the level of emulation becomes very high (aka not accurate).
As for Batman Returns yes, I remember it having serious sound clicking. Also try Hook and go to the waters at the first stage... you'll get a pretty intense slowdown due to the transparency effect!
-
@matchaman Ive spoken with alot of people on the retropie FB page and no one could figure it out.... they said their Pi3 model B runs snes fine... something about maybe i might need to create a new image but i REALLY do not wanna do alll that again in hopes that it MIGHT fix this audio stutter with snes..... i was under the impression that the pi3 3 B could run snes just fine i get the audio stutter with every snes emulator on the pi... ive checked all of my settings and nothing seems outa place......
-
@matchaman so overclocking my pi3b will fix this issue??? im not sure why im having problems and other people with pi3b arnt unless they actually had a different model
-
I assume that some of us are more sensitive to audio clicks. I remember reporting a similar stutter issue on SNES9X (the actual emulator, not the core) about a decade ago and none could hear it... thankfully one of the developers understood what I was mumbling about and fixed something regarding DirectSound!
Anyhow, for me it's a "verified" issue that's solved by either overclocking the Pi 3 or getting the 3B+ model. That little boost does the trick.
For anyone who's reading this, we're talking about nitpicking on sound clicks/stutter. Possibly a frequency most people can't hear? Maybe because I'm using headphones? (lovelorn88 are you using headphones too?)
-
@matchaman eh... the audio stutter i have is VERY hard to miss.... not nit picking at all Yoshis island for example gets really bad.... youd have to be deaf for it to not bother you...... a AWFUL crackling in the audio for snes
-
@matchaman and no.... i use my tv tried with the tv speaker,, my sound bar and EVEN headphones.... this isnt a sound problem someone could miss
-
@matchaman yoshis island for example is hard to stand do to the lag in the audio no way anyone can miss it.... but the gba port sounds fine
-
@matchaman i just now overclocked it to 1.4 ... SILL have the audio problems with snes.... i knew that wouldnt fix this smh
-
@matchaman so yeah..... overclocking has made NO change in this awful audio lag, crackle, stutter, my next guess is good it be the actual board itself???? even though its ONLY snes doing this to me? its really unplayble.... but yes i overclocked now at 1400 and RIGHT at start up snes has audio problems.. so heating is not the issue
-
That's strange. If it's so persistent, the first thing you should do is to try your card on another Pi. If you can't, you should do a fresh installation.

I was disagreeing with you there, but I redid some tests and I don't notice the slowdowns I get anymore with my pi3b+ at 1500mhz. In my first tests, yoshi's island got horrendous slowdowns but now it's fullspeed. Not sure if that much difference was changed with the base retropie stretch image and a fully updated one.
