This is very cool.
That's why i'm always saying that people shouldn't discard clones, in fbalpha/fbneo
mslug2t
has been supported for a long time, however people prefer not looking at clones and overclocking the emulated cpu to get rid of slowdowns (causing issues with other games when doing it globally).@WeirdH said in mame2003-plus: hundreds of new games, improved input, features, new bugs - now with runahead support:
Is it enough to rename the turbo version's '941-p1.p1' to '241-p1.bin' and put it inside the mslug2.zip for m2003+
Messing manually with the content of a romset is never a good idea, i recommend using the
mslug2t
romset properly instead. -
Hi @barbudreadmon, do you know any good resources about preferable clones? Thanks.
-
@Clyde i've seen a few ressources trying to do this over the years, but only partial lists. Try googling "worthy mame clones".

So we now support Metal Slug 2 - Turbo in this core try it vs the original version and im sure you'll agree it plays a fair bit better.

Technically no you cannot as mslug2 expects 241-p1.bin which has different CRC and SHA values, you could however make mslug2t a parent rom
to avoid duplication in your romlist if that's the issue. -

Depends on what your criteria is i suppose, personally i like my games to be in English and to be uncensored so the roms i keep will reflect that.
BTW this site contains alotta good info............
Search for a game you like either by name or romname and check out the history section for example lets look at Night Slashers
http://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_mame.php?game_name=nslasher&arcade_only=0&autosearch=1
In the Japanese version:
The gore is uncensored (red blood instead of green). At the end of a melee attack, Christopher holds out a cross instead of a crystal ball. The Go arrow flips over to read 'To Hell!' in blood. Extra pictures and dialogs in the cut-scenes.
Sometimes though they dont have all the info to hand for example seeing as i prefer my games in English i checked the overseas and usa versions of this game
and unlike the Korean version via the service mode you can turn the gore on manually and then you have the best of both words all the violence in a language
you can understand :) -

But just to see what would happen, I did rename the file and copied it into the zip. The game does run and even mentions Metal Slug Turbo in the service menu. (I can't comment on better performance however, as I've only played Metal Slug X before.) Does this mean it actually worked? Please forgive my ignorance.

The simple and easiest way to have done it is to take your mslug2 rename it to mslug2t and drop in the 941-p1.p1 rom thats what i did :)
Anyway since it says turbo in the service mode we can assume it worked, although since you likely have the warnings switched off in the core you would
have missed the error message on boot which would have informed you that since the rom you renamed was incorrect for mslug2 the game might not function correctly. So just because it seems to be correct doesn't mean it is, if i was you i do what i did above to be on the safe side ;)
-
@arcadez2003 Cool, thanks. Yeah, I do have warnings turned off, as I usually only throw stuff at it that is confirmed working. :)

I found this a while ago. Not all games work on Pi / M3+, but it's still a fun list to peruse.

Yeah some good info there, i can think of around ten i could add to it, im sure plenty of people on here could do likewise and before ya know it we'd have a big ole list.
-
@arcadez2003 @WeirdH Thanks for the links, I'll look into them. The problem with such lists is maintaining them after the initial creation. Although most information about parents and clones should remain the same over some time, one change here or there could easily accumulate over longer periods.

Couple of decent fixes for Elevator Action Returns and Fighters History that are worth a mention..........
In current MAME and even the Taito Legends sets if you shot the lights or power boxes in Elevator Actions returns the game doesn't go dark, but i found a fix for
this in an old shmupMAME src and i've added support for this main feature of the gameplay to MAME2003+ also expect this in the latest FBN builds as i gave dink
the heads up about it earlier.Elevator Action II
I thought i'd fixed this small sprite priority bug on Ryoko's level but it's sorted now at anyrate
Fighters History Before and after

@arcadez2003 Keeping the awesomeness coming, I see.
I would love some Elevator Action Returns, but the one time I tried it, it ran really slow. Is this due to the (lack of) horsepower on a Pi 3B+, or is it an emulation issue?

Taito F3 needs something more powerful than a pi3b+ to run with FBNeo, idk about MAME2003+
-
@barbudreadmon With an oc'd pi3b+ and frameskip enabled it's "playable" on Plus, but with a pi4 it's full speed on both emulators. I haven't tried but I've seen people say taito f3 games and even st-v games run fullspeed on advancemame. I wish that was a libretro core.

Emulation on lesser spec hardware i suppose, on the xbox with a similar ole MAME core that has the speedups in the taito_f3 driver we get around 20 - 30 fps
depending on which game it is, i think it's the soundcore which causes the issues if we had a speedup for that similar to say DCS for the Midway games we'd
get a big ole boost. -
Incredible, the hack has bean realized :D
Please, will you add it to MAME2003+ ... to play it on PI <3

@arcadez2003 I second emulation issues.
I am using a non-overclocked Pi3B+ with AdvanceMame_3.9 and "Elevator Action Returns" (as well as other Taito F3-Games) run great without hacks or frame-skipping.
I love this game, so i was very happy when it got a remarkable performance-boost with AdvanceMame_3.0, with the Version 1.4 and lower Taito F3 was also very laggy (=unplayable).@darksavior: SEGA Titan (STV) Games dont run smooth on AdvanceMame. They do start - but they are way too laggy to have fun playing them, some even have major graphic-issues.
As mentioned: speaking about a non-overclocked Pi3B+ without any perfomance-tweaks.
Talking about "i wish it was a libretro-core": i dont feel any disantvantages.
I can map various actions on several buttons of several input devices (as example: Button A = Joystick Button 1 plus Arcade-Stick Button 1 plus Keyboard Button A...and so on.)
You cant do that with retrorach.
The scanlines (various to choose) look great and overall you get the same feeling and handling as a libretro-core, but better performance and support of the 0.106 romset. -

Thanks for this awesome work. You even anticipated my question about the EAR light fix in FBN. 😃👍
-
@sirhenrythe5th I do the same with Elevator Action Returns, although I believe I'm using AdvanceMame 3.7 rather than 3.9. It's been the only emulator so far that works full speed, as far as I can tell. However, I'm not sure whether the "lights go out" if you shoot the lights/power boxes. Recollection is that it doesn't and I'm not near my pi to try it out.
