Racing games

So I was wondering if you guys like to play racing games on the Pi? Which ones get the most play time? Everything goes (arcade, sim, partygames).
For me it's:
Wipeout 2097 / 3 / 64 (PS1 & N64)
Destruction derby 2 (PS1)
Mario kart 64 (N64)
(I've got more: Moto racer (ps1), Motorhead (ps1), Crash team racing (ps1), Micro machines V3 (ps1) but they rarily get any playtime.)I've been looking for the best F1 game for the Pi as well. I guess F1 06 for the PSP would be one of the best, but the one I tried brought me right back to emulation station (also I think it would be too demanding). F1 '97 for the ps1 is alright, but the handling isn't really good. I also tried Grand prix 2 for DOS, but it's pretty slow sadly.

@bobharris I think I might catch flack for this but I actually perfer Diddy Kong racing over Mario kart. The AI doesn't cheat like they do in Mario kart (unlimited boost mushroom and they catch up to me two secs later?). I also like the variety in vehicles and I think the race tracks are more inspired.
Also Sega gt for Dreamcast seems to run pretty good on the pi as well.
-
Interested in this as well! :)
As I mentioned in the other thread I have running so far:
- Destruction Derby 2 (PSX)
- Gran Turismo 1 (PSX)
- Gran Turismo 2 (PSX)
- Micro Machines v4 (PSP)
- Mario Kart (SNES)
How does Mario Kart 64 run on the Pi 3B+? I don't overclock so be aware of that. :)

Never even gave the DC system a thought on the Pi. May have to check that out too. Require an O/C?

@classicgmr Mario kart 64 runs well if you use the mupen64plus-gles2n64 emulator/graphic plugin
For Dreamcast I overclock but I can test for you with stock clock speeds.
-
@classicgmr Mario Kart 64 runs very well, it has the odd audio / graphical hiccup but that is mainly restricted to the menus. Nothing that detracts from the awesome gameplay. Truly has to be one of the greatest multi-player games ever. It turns the most meek, modest person into a raging, uber-competitive trash-talker!

Nah ... personal experience has shown me that - in my house - it's Worms Armageddon on the Dreamcast... but that's a new subject for a new thread. >:)
-
@classicgmr does worms for dreamcast run well on the pi? (Sorry, not trying to detail the thread)
-
@jonnykesh Yeah Mario kart 64 multiplayer is great. 4 player splitscreen works very well without overclocking. The only issue I notice is the balloons on other peoples kart grow bigger the further the kart is away from you, pretty odd :-)

Dunno :)

@classicgmr haha I should pay better attention!

@jonnykesh Goldeneye 007 would like a word with you

@lilbud during the N64s heyday I crushed my friends playing GoldenEye. Mainly because I used the c buttons to strafe. You'd think they'd would have wised up to this but I don't think they ever did.
On topic:
Episode 1 racer for Dreamcast is fun and runs well on the pi
The road rash series is also a blast

Doesnt run on retropie but Ridge Racer 2 on PSP is an amazing game that combines all the best of the previous 5 ridge racer games with a really awesome drifting mechanic, great sound track and generally awesome arcade racing gameplay! I emulate it on my mac when i need my fix, haha.

@quicksilver I used to pick Oddjob. My friends didn't understand why until they got too close to me and couldn't see me anymore because I was so short. Loved that guy. We also used to play Proximity Mines and Remote Mines only and those were a blast to come up with creative strategies.
-
@thedatacereal haha we had a standing rule "no oddjob". And anyone that picked jaws was a chump.
-
On topic : I have to second Mario Kart 64. The multiplayer is one of the best in my opinion.
-
@quicksilver Haha. We wound up with that rule eventually once I got better.

Some my alltime favorite Racing games not covered here are:
- Wave Race 64 (N64)
- Unirally / Uniracers (SNES)

Good choices! I forgot about Wave Race and have yet to play Uniracers.

@thelostsoul as a bonus waverace 64 works great on my overclocked pi3 using the mupen64plus-rice emulator/plugin (high res runs well too).
