To update retropie the procedure is reported in the wiki, and that leads also to a verison progress if avaible from an older version, say 4.3 to 4.4, as far as igot, but if we use apt in the command line by typing:

      sudo apt dist-upgrade

The result will be the same?

@niculinux RetroPie does not use dist-upgrade to upgrade the OS, it only updates the packages for the current OS version.

@mitu so to update to a more recent verison following the emulatiostation procedure it's enough of it is necessary to flash a brand new image from scratch?

@niculinux Right now, if you started with a 4.3 image, you can just use the normal procedure to update - the one you linked in the documentation. This image is using Raspbian Jessie, a release which is no longer supported by the Raspbian team.
The latest image (4.4) released is based on Raspbian Stretch, but otherwise it contains the same software you get by updating normally when you start with a 4.3 (or possibly older) image. In the future, the RetroPie script will probably drop support for Raspbian Jessie, so you'll have to upgrade also the OS - by flashing a new image.
If you're just starting, I'd advise to start with a fresh 4.4 image and not an older 4.3 release.

@mitu ok thanks, i installed 4.4 image on a plain SD card, that is my first attempt to use retropie :D. So, as in some linux distibutions, version progress by update is not supported, like in ubuntu, that may be achieved without reinstalling. So users are supposed to install form scratch i get :) but in the future it is not planning retropie to adopt a "rolling relase"model?

RetroPie is not an OS, the image you use on the Raspberry Pi is based on Raspbian Linux. Support for OS release is not offered in Raspbian, so RetroPie cannot offer it unless they implement it.

@mitu ok, what applies to Raspbian goes also with Retropie; so to uograde to a brand new version i think users have go follow the procedure reported on the official site, or the Debian wiki itself. It's s pity it's not automated like in Ubuntu, but that's debian philosopy.

Raspbian is not Debian, it's just a derivative. Debian supports rolling upgrades, Raspbian does not.
