Hot Key not working in MAME

I have been trying to get this to work for the past 2 days. it seems as though no matter how many times I reconfigure my buttons, that my Hot Key will not work when I try to add credits while in Mame trying to play arcade games.
I added a select button to use as Hot Keys. It works for nintendo, Neo Geo, but not Mame.
Has anyone else had this issue programming Hot Keys and how did you fix it. I am using the the configu

There are multiple MAME emulators. It's impossible to advise without more information about your set up.

@jgbgumby provide details of your setup as detailed in the link.
Mame4all doesn't use the retroarch hotkeys. You probably want another emulator. See the docs.

I dunno if this helps. But I noticed when I did my 2 player 6 button + coin, players, and hot key setup, left and right controls would always swap for some unknown reason. Making the hot key not work. I have no idea why, it makes no sense to me. But as soon as I swapped the 2 USB ports, everything is golden.
