      Hi,

Before we do a 4.0 release it would be good to get some user feedback on the new functionality - especially any new bugs introduced. The new image is rebuilt on top of a fresh Raspbian, so it's possible we have missed some dependencies, or some system configuration that should be set up by default.

      Download:
      https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases/tag/4.0-rc2

The images are smaller than as less is installed by default - mostly just the main libretro cores, and mame4all/pifba. One of the main things for the 4.0 release was to allow us to add more emulators/ports without ending up with huge images with everything installed by default, so the new retropie-setup allows easy installation of additional emulators, but comes with a smaller selection by default. Many more pre-built binaries are available for the Raspberry Pi (all packages in core/main/optional). You can also remove things you don't want, and keep the things you do want up to date.

      Changes since 3.8.1:

      • Setup script improvements:
        • Added the ability to install/update and remove packages.
        • Added help docs to the setup script.
      • Renamed mednafen emulators to beetle to match upstream libretro repositories.
      • Renaming of ES input configuration which was causing confusion for shoulder/trigger inputs.
      • Input configuration script to set up player 1 automatically on pifba.
      • Updated PSP emulators ppsspp and lr-ppsspp with a fix for the pausing during play.
      • Autostart improvements: boot to kodi option added - (exiting kodi will take you back to emulationstation).
      • Improvements to mupen64plus Glide64 video plugin, which is now the default.
      • Updates to various other emulators including reicast, lr-fceumm, lr-nestopia, lr-snes9x-next and the RetroArch frontend.
      • SDL2 dispmanx scaling, so SDL2 software can render to a lower resolution and be scaled in hardware. This enhances performance on mupen64plus for example, without having to change the video mode.
      • Improvements to the bluetooth configuration, including the ability to try and reconnect to devices in the background, and an option to switch off our mapping hack for 8bitdo, so devices with a newer firmware will work correctly with retroarch.
      • Splashscreen improvements: New default splashscreen thanks to rookervik and a new splashscreen repository with more splashscreens.
      • New experimental modules:
        • TRS-80 emulator sdltrs.
        • TI-99/4A emulator ti99sim.
        • Oric 1/Atmos emulator Oricutron.
        • Dinothawr (lr-dinothawr - standalone libretro puzzle game).
        • Alternate Virtual Gamepad by sbidolach.
      • Various other bugfixes and improvements.

I posted this earlier (it was 4.0 beta1 then), but missed a couple of things in the new image generation that needed to be fixed, so I had to take it down. Hopefully all major problems are sorted now.

Just to let you know, you accidentally used the old link for 4.0-beta1 instead of the new 4.0-beta2 link.
I don't know if this was intentional, but I just wanted to bring this to your attention.

Does it support the gasia/shanwan ps3 controller ?
I can help with that if needed.

@BuZz OK... I downloaded 4 beta 2 for pi3 and put it on a 64gig sd card. For a quick test I install centipede for Atari 2600 and using my logitech f310(the only controller I have) and it looks good. Will keep you posted. :-]

@eddyman1us no changes since rp 3.8. driver needs installing from drivers section. I don't have this controller to test though

What does the new splashscreen look like? (I will be away from the pi for a couple more days)

@lilbud The splash screen is clean and simple and the first time it boots(actually the second time) all you see is the retropie folder with config files. I very smooth setup! Your folders don't show until your games are installed.

@BuZz Update. I went into the raspi-config file and set up my location(as i'm in the colonies:-)) and nothing changed there. I think that is controlled by raspian but it's good to know it still works.

@BuZz I just installed kodi from retropie and it works like a charm! I am able to control it using my logitech f310. So far, so good.

There is a new firmware/kernel out - Please can people sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade on the new image also and give the new kernel a test.

@BuZz I'll give that a go as well. To anyone else there are some users reporting inconsistencies with multiple xbox360 controllers if anyone else can help verify that issue that would be good so we can get a fix upstream if it really is a kernel or firmware based issue

@BuZz OK... I've upgraded the kernel and firmware and no glitches yet. Is there a list of things you would like us to try? I'm not that big gamer and I don't do much, but I would be willing to test different configurations. I just thought of something. Could you make up a list similar to the list for reporting trouble on this forum? Maybe a testing report to fill out? Forgive me if you have something like this on the wiki as it just came to me.
