I currently run 128gb cards but fancy messing with something bigger - I was looking on eBay at 256gb cards but the prices vary so much I can only imagine a lot of them are fake. How do I go about checking in advance if I am likely to get a legit card? Obviously I need to stay away from the very cheapest end of the spectrum but it is hard to know where the fake cards end and the chip legit ones start!

Going into a store isn't possible as they are just all retail prices and am looking to save at least some money.
Or would I be better off getting an external hdd? If I did, would I be able to power the ssd from the pi or would I have to get an enclosure and power supply for it? I guess the advantages of an external hdd are greater storage for the price and rom management when updating the OS may be easier - I am aware I wouldn't get full usb3.0 transfer speeds so would a spinner be ok if am am forced to run the hdd from an external power supply?

Have you tried microcenter they are not too bad like 50$.

480 ssd are going for around 50$ may be the way to go but you would have to get a external enclousure.
