@herts101 It seems you're using a Raspbian Jessie based RetroPie image, which does not have that package. Can you please add more info about your system, as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first ?

Also, game collections and all of that have been around for over a year, maybe almost two? So it's likely that you're version already had it, or at least you'd be able to install it from binary?

What EmulationStation version are you on? It shows on the start menu.

don't want to hijack this conversation, but having the same issue.
          running: Linux 4.9.35-v7+ armv7l GNU/Linux on a raspberry pi 3+
          retropi 4.4.8 emulation station 2.6.3

I had everything configured exactly how I wanted it with a previous version. UI mode on kiosk etc, but then changed my THEME, which required and upgrade, which took UI Modes away.
So I then updated everything but can not install emulation-dev. here's why

          = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Installing dependencies for 'emulationstation-dev' : EmulationStation (latest development version) - Frontend used by RetroPie for launching emulators
          = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Did not find needed package(s): vlc rapidjson-dev. I am trying to install them now.

I've spent hours getting all my game meta data, themes, controllers, etc exactly as I want them.

All I truly want, is for 1 night, when I have high schoolers over, for them to not be able to QUIT emulation station (the STARt menu) nor change my config.

If I could do something in command line to disable the retropie menu from emulation station,
and to disable the START menus, I would do it.. I don't need to install kiosk mode if I can hack it CLI wise.

          thank you
          -Chad

@gimpel Install the normal emulationstation package, not the -dev package, and install it from binary. This should get you an older version, but one that still has the Kids mode feature.

thanks, tried that, same error - vlc rapidjson-dev not found. I keep getting 'Jessie not supported' but this is the latest of everything, is it not?

You are running on a Raspbian Jessie based image, so that's correct. Even if the script is the latest version (4.4.8), you are using an older Raspbian version. Try installing manually the raspidjson-dev package - see https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/20613 - and then re-install the normal emulationstation package.

I have now forced Jessie to use v2.7.6 of ES without that dependency. Jessie support has been dropped. People will probably continue to ignore the dialog stating this :-). I may disable the update menu items on Jessie also.

Help me understand, I installed the LATEST image of Retropi from the main website, and Jessie is no longer supported? Perhaps the website should include a supported image? Is is the Raspian part that makes it Jessie? I will admit I had no idea what the name of the version of the image I was installing was. I was actually trying to get the latest and the greatest, but it sounds like I somehow got the out of date version.

@gimpel the latest image from the site since April last year has been on Stretch, not Jessie.

ah.. saw the news on the main page here, thanks Buzz.
Mitu - I tried what you suggested, and it worked, only now it's also asking for VLC, and the latest image won't install properly using the manual method.

BUT, forcing the rapidjson-dev to install, and then going to re-install the emulator (not the dev) hung up on VLC, so I finally figured out which VLC to install, and everything worked. Thanks for the tips.
