      Use the command;
sudo raspi-config to change the open gl driver to default under advanced settings. You will also want to make sure the gpu memory split is high enough. As I noticed setting the openglKMS driver will set the gpu lower.

        Was the half-life install successful?

Well maybe that is not the solution. I think that the opengl driver has a different error. You will need to exit the desktop space and run emulationstation from that CLI and not xterm.

@asianchinaboi Emulationstation doesn't work with Xorg, X11 - if you're starting Emulationstation from your desktop session, this doesn't work. Also, please note that the OpenGL Desktop driver is not compatible with RetroPie, if you enable it, at least make sure you disable Emulationstation auto-starting on boot.

Sorry to run you for the loop, I got this error mixed up twice. You can also change the startup mode from desktop-autologin to commandline-autologin(emulationstation) using raspi-config

I have a feeling that it’s the libsdl2 and libsdl2-dev I uninstalled and reinstalled from attampting to fix something that wasn’t in the guide

@asianchinaboi did you update your sources.list?
It should be easy enough to reinstall sdl using apt

I uninstalled libsdl2-dev and emulationstation still worked.
However reinstalling libsdl2 meets broken dependencies, I guess I'll figure that out later.

Are you certain you are trying to enter emulationstation after exiting completely from the desktop environment?

I'm reading through the half-life install, but in the meantime you could try
                                  sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
And update. It will update all the emulators too, so hopefully nothing will break and it will take a while.
Or you can go into core packages and update just emulationstation.

I probably mistyped it. Oh well forget the whole update thing.
Inside /boot/config.txt you added some lines for the framebuffer depth and alpha pass try hashing those out and rebooting.

@Efriim what do you mean by hashing it out?

@asianchinaboi oh wait I just figured how to hash it out
I did it and unfortunately it didn’t work it just made the screen smaller so I just put the hash’s back in the config file
