Emergency mode on boot
-
Good day,
I flashed a fresh retropie image (for pi 0) on a class 10 64 gb micro sd card and am being greeted with an “emergency mode” message. Being the first time I’ve ever seen such a message, I simply decided to reformat the sd card and again re-flash the image. Unfortunately I’m getting the same result. Before I buy another sd card, has anyone got a suggestion for a fix?Thank you,
Chris -
What is the actual error message before the "emergency mode" start ? Try flashing the Raspbian Lite install image, to see if you get the same problem.

@mitu
Here’s the full sequence:
on boot, Raspbian runs a script then goes momentarily to the retropie splash screen. After a few moments I’m back at the terminal now with “checking in progress on 1 disk ( x% complete)” displays at the bottom . Next, I see:
In red font [ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-serial1.device.
[ TIME ] Timed our waiting for device dev-disk-by\x2dpartuuid-14a75fe9\x2d01.device.
I’m yellow font [ DEPEND ] Dependency failed for /boot. complete)
[ DEPEND ] Dependency failed for Local File Systems.
[ DEPEND ] Dependency failed for File System Check on /dev/disk/by-partuuid/14a75fe-01.
At the very bottom it reads:
You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type “journalctl -xb” to view system logs, “system to reboot” to reboot, “systemctl default” or ^D to try again to boot into default mode.
Checking i progress on 1 disk (90.0% complete)
Can not open access to console, the root account is locked.
See sulogin(8) man page for more details.Press Enter to continue.
And that’s about it. If I press Enter, it will launch emulationstation.
Thank you,

[...]Seems something similar to https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=220470. If the
/etc/fstab
entries are ok (and they should be, if you used the RetroPie image), my guess is that the card is too slow or has some errors when the partition check is performed. -
@mitu [UPDATE]
I ended up purchasing another class 10 sandisk 64 gb micro sd card and flashed the stock retropie Zero w image from the website. On boot - got the same result. I began to wonder if it was perhaps just the fact I was using a 64 gb card. So, I purchased yet another micro sd card, this time 32 gb. I’ve had no problems with it whatsoever. It’s been running like a charm!
