Playing 720 on MAME

  • I'd like to know how to play 720 on MAME (well, for me, MAME2003-plus). It was one of my favorite arcade games growing up, and I'd love to be able to successfully play it once again.

I remember about 15 years ago, when I was mired in an unfortunate period of unemployment, I would pass the time by playing some games, especially 720. The MAME version I was playing with at that time seemed to have some sort of conversion baked in so one could play it with a standard-issue controller and not have to build his own cabinet with a spinner inside.

Is anyone here successfully playing 720 on their Pi, with any modern version of any emulator? If so, how are you doing it?

  • 720 runs perfect on my Setup using AdvanceMAME 3.9.
I use the analog stick of an 8BitDo or DS3-Controller to control the Skater.
Of course a Spinball would be the best choice, but it is pretty playable with stick also.

  • I can't imagine you need a spinner or a trackwheel to play this, the original used a standard 8-way joystick as far as I can tell from the photos. You need something fairly accurate so you can move in 360 degrees pretty well, you don't want any clunky movement.

  • I've just read this on the mamedev wiki... "The original controller for 720 Degrees was a joystick that was hardware-limited to only travel along the outermost edges in a circle. The internal mechanism for reading this control was similar to a spinner except that it had the additional benefit of knowing which direction the joystick was pointing. Because this knowledge is an important aspect of the game, the current emulation of the controller maps an analog joystick to the underlying controls instead of a spinner." I've never heard of this before! That would be hard to emulate. So does this mean that the system doesn't recognise when the joystick is central, so you always have to be facing in a direction for the game to work? I'm guessing you would have to set the controls in mame to allow this, but you wouldn't need to configure it as a spinner. I'm pretty sure your left right up down system would work as normal.
