How do you install Hexen/Heretic in RetroPie?
-
How's it going guys?. I'm doing a PiGRRL 2 build with the Adafruit kit, and while I wait for the kit to arrive I'm trying to get my Pi 2 Model B set up.
I've installed lr-prboom (hope that's right) and figured out how to install Doom 2, so I have a basic understanding of how to install wads or atleast wads for the vanilla Doom engine. I tried this with Hexen and it didn't work and after some reading I've found Hexen and Heretic were are based on a modified version of the Doom engine. So after some more reading I found where someone said they got it to work with zdoom, I completely uninstalled everything to do with lr-prboom and Doom then did a fresh install of zdoom, Doom worked however I couldn't get it to properly work with the official 360 controller I was using and I also couldn't get Hexen to start.
Is there a way to install Hexen and Heretic on RetroPie and get it to show in the Ports section as well as work with the PiGRRL 2's button configuration?. I have a Dingoo A320 which is basically a Chinese emulator device that can run a form of Linux called Dingux and it plays these games wonderfully, but I'm not very familiar with Linux aside from some commands and a couple RetroPie setups.
Thanks.

i can tell you for sure that hexen doesn't behave differently than doom in zdoom that i've ever seen, and i've played through both hexen and heretic in zdoom multiple times. if your having an issue, it's either somehow platform specific, which seems unlikely, or there is a problem with your wad.
here's a post on gog with one guy describing how he did it:https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_does_this_pc_game_run_in_raspberry_piretropie_thread
also, if you keep hitting a wall, you could try running in dosbox, as they are dos titles. zdoom is an enhanced program, so it may be more resource intensive anyway.

That was a HUGE help, thank you!. Got the games running now just need to figure out how to map the buttons.

@Retro_PiGamer the one issue is not being able to set menu exit and enter to a controller. There is a modified version on this forum thats recent.

You can either install, configure and use xboxdrv driver for your Xbox360 gamepad or you could follow the guide from RetroS3xual modified gamepad for ZDoom
Either way you should end up with a successful port working with your gamepad for ZDoom. Xboxdrv can also be used for other systems, ports that does not natively support gamepad. I have used it for my Hexen 2, Jazz Jackrabbit and Hexen/Heretic it self in ZDoom.
If you choose the xboxdrv way, i will help you as much as i can. :-)

@tpo1990 Very cool. i hope i can figure it out. does seem easier then messing with xboxdrv, not that is really that bad

@ExarKunIv Well i guess it depends on whether if you want to recompile ZDoom again for it to work with a modified gamepad or install the Xboxdrv driver package and create a runcommand file to be used. The Xboxdrv has the most advantage as it can be used for any port or any system and it works with any gamepad, while the other is only used for ZDoom.
I think Xboxdrv is the most versatile but if you only want to build a Doom inspired system, then RetroS3xual modified gamepad for ZDoom is probably the way to go and should work fine.
