I would call the Sticky "it is done when its done!"

I doubt that this thread would help to keep the upcoming questions like "When is the image for raspberry 4 available? Does it run N64???" away, but in the end it is the descision of the dev team wether they want a silent development or not.

Personally i just have patience, i could image that i will wait till autumn/winter to buy a Pi4 concerning retropie.
It is a lot of work to do and it will take some time for a proper release.
There might be an initial release in August/September, but i am talking about a near stable version and i doubt this will be 4.6 (or 5.0 if the counter is updated for Buster).

I'd prefer a bit better information flow than just "It'll be ready when it's ready". I'm happy to wait, but some general sense of progress can make the wait more tolerable.

I can make that for you.

Current status: Retropie doesn't work on a pi 4.

Current update. Working to fix those things

Next update: when these things are fixed

Timescale: as long as it takes

How will it be achieved: fixes and testing

So the pi 4 is brand new hardware. The current pi image was made and designed to work with older hardware. To get it to work will take as long as it takes to work through all the things needed to make it work.

At best the Devs could give an estimated ETA, but i'm not sure why they'd do that, as things can crop up while making changes.

Have a bit of patience, as it has been said previously, but it really will be ready when it's ready.

So... just thinking a little more about it... has anyone on the project team thought of reaching out to the Raspberry Pi Foundation to see about getting some Pi 4s on behalf of the RetroPie project (rather than ordering / buying them as individuals)?

RetroPie seems to have a pretty decent following. Over 20,000 registered users on this forum, and over 70,000 subscribers in the r/RetroPie subreddit, and it's probably one of the bigger reasons why people are buying Raspberry Pis, so a request like this would have some legitimacy.

There is a system for that: https://retropie.org.uk/donate/

                    And a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/retropie

EDIT: bear in mind that donations not necessarily are for buying RPIs, but also to support the time and other resources of the dev team. And more importantly, donating is not an obligation for the devs to work on any particular subject.
                    EDIT2: Added Patreon link.

@hhromic i am aware of the donation-system and will use it for sure!
I am really thankful for all the great work the devs do (for us users in the end).

I'm patient ;) gives the real developers a chance to get a head start before it shows up at my door. Afraid I don't have the time for development that I used to, glad others smarter than me have taken the reigns

The pi foundation did reach out to us after launch which was cool of them.

I was actually surprised that this is all happening behind closed doors. I just assumed that this was a really open community project that everyone could contribute to.

                            it's all on git: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/

follow the commit messages and PRs and you can see what's being developed. beyond that, there's discussions going on behind the scenes, but there's no formal roadmap. remember this isn't a job :)
