PlayStation controller not executing trackball emulation

I've noticed my PlayStation controller will not respond well with trak ball games using MAME....up,down,and right respond..but no left command. Could this be a driver issue?

You can use
jstest(from the command line) and test if the left 'command' works. Exit Emulationstation and runjstest /dev/input/js0use the gamepad and see if the actions are registered. Exit the test by pressing
Ctrl + C. If the button/joystick works, then it's not a driver issue.
