      Hi!
No matter if it is wired or bluetooth, branded Nintendo or not.
When I go through configuration and bind each button, it doesn't detect the left direction of the Right Joystick.
Skipping it and going up to try it again won't do anything.
What I found is: when I apply the settings anyway and go through input configuration again to try one more time it sometimes detects it or not (in case it doesn't detect, I try again and repeat until it gets detected).

It gets detected at 3rd or 4th try sometimes. Even at 7th try. Today it got detected at 1st try. It's totally random.

I run jtest and there's no problem with the joystick, with any of them.

Why is this happening? Why the detection is not consistent? Is anyone experiencing this? Thank you.

You know I had a similarly different issue, right around when I map I think it was "L2", it would map L2 then map R1 quickly to the wrong input, and then just skip R2. I remember it not doing that on a brand new image, or possibly a different distribution like LibreElec. I think this was because L2 and R2 have both an axis that is at an extreme value and a BTN assignment.

I was using a Playstation DS3 with the sixaxis driver.

And at a different time I had the X axis on the Right Analog not working. I only noticed it in Chrono Cross. I solved the issue but I don't recall what the problem was, maybe I had configured input again.

What type of controller(s) you have ?

1.- Blackfire Pro Series (3rd party Switch Pro Controller) https://www.ardistel.com/producto.asp?d=8431305027881 (detected in retropie as an android controller)

2.- Official Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller (obviously, detected as Wii U Pro Controller in Retropie)

Both of them won't bind the left direction of the Right Joystick at random. As random as "here comes the left direction of the Right Joystick, I honestly don't know what's going to happen".

You may be stumbling upon this issue - https://github.com/RetroPie/EmulationStation/issues/577.

The issue I posted is related to this one - posted initially by the author - where more details are given.

This topic is a bit old, but I had a similar issue and found the root issue so it may help you or others in the future.

Long story short, maybe EmulationStation gamepad mapping configurator 'dead-zone' is too big for your gamepad.
