Arcade1Up 12-in-1 Deluxe trackball and spinner only, will I need a joystick also?
-
Hello all, I've tried and failed to find an answer for this, so I'll ask here. Is is possible to RetroPie this cabinet without adding a joystick? I dropped in a Glenns Retro Show trackball and spinner and have the USB interface. I also have a zero delay USB encoder for the buttons. My question is, will I be able to navigate the menus etc. with the trackball/buttons alone, or is a joystick required to be able to use RetroPie? I wanted a trackball/spinner cabinet only, as is. Installing a stick on the deck will not look that great and will ruin the current deck artwork.
-Thanks for any insight. -
Well, the front-end (Emulationstation) needs a D-Pad/Joystick to navigate and at least 2 buttons (A and B) to operate. You can use any of the buttons available, as long as they're on the same gamepad/controller. I see the cabinet has 7 buttons, so you might be able to map and use them in EmulationStation - but you'll have to manually create the gamepad mappings for the emulators.

That's what I was afraid of. Not a super big deal, but not my first choice. Also is it possible to use one set of controls for the first and second player (map the same controls twice or is that not possible?) Thanks again.

Also is it possible to use one set of controls for the first and second player, using the second player start button( I guess mapped on player 2)
It depends on the emulator, most of them (Libretro/RetroArch) cannot split one controller to multiple players (with the exception of
lr-mame2003(-plus
). What games/systems are you interested in running ? -
Just arcade Arkanoid 1&2 with a spinner is what I really wanted plus I'd like to have the original 12 from the cabinet. Tempest, Missile command, Centipede, Asteroids, etc. 1 player is probably all I'll ever need anyway. I've RetroPie'd a 1up Streetfighter and was waiting to swap that 3B+ with a 4B and was going to use the extra 3B+ for this, but couldn't wait anymore and got another 3B+. lol. I thank you again for the info, I did check out the "Spinners, Trackballs, Lightguns, Mice" section of the docs. I'd just hate to drill holes only to find out it was never possible in the first place.

If the USB encoder makes all 7 buttons available, then you can navigate the UI and start games so it should be possible to make EmulationStation use it. As for the 2nd Player, you can use
advmame
for arcade emulation and it would be possible to split the encoder inputs to both, not sure about how practical it is though.
